3pt Backhoe attachment Has anybody used one?

I was wondering if anybody has ever used a 3pt backhoe on a tractor and what you thought of it. Did it do a good job? How much can you do with them? If I bought this one it would be used in hard ground (not loose dirt) for digging, and pulling stumps, things of that nature. Wouldn't be digging a basement but still putting it through it's paces. Also does anybody know what an old used one in good condition goes for at auction? Thanks for all info.

Don't kid yourself into thinking that a 3 pt backhoe can compare to a real backhoe. I've used them for digging trenches and cleaning ditches in a sandy soil area. I wouldn't think of recommending one for heavy soils or digging up stumps. They move the dirt OK in sand, but they are so hard on the tractor. Aside from the weight, the jerking is terrible. And unless you have a ton of add on front end weights, you'll be relying on your directional breaks to steer.

I got one to use on our tractor at work. It cost aroun$6000 and is small and very wimpy conpared to my $6000 case backhoe. It can't cut a root the size of your finger it seems and has very limited reach.

If you already have a heavy front loader on the tractor you won't need front end weights. I am not saying that they compare with a dedicated backhoe, but beat the heck out of digging ditches, etc with a shovel. Who needs the cost of buying and keeping up a dedicated backhoe when all that is needed is some occasional ditch digging/cleaning out. And use at least a medium sized utility tractor, not a tricycle type.

Last year we borrowed a neighbor's 3pt backhoe mounted on his 4020 to fix some tile lines and while it was better than a shovel it was certainly a long ways from being a real backhoe. That one had a pto pump but the ground was really dry at the time and it really struggled to do much more than shave a couple of inches of dirt off at a time. The thing I really didn't like about it was that you could tell it was putting alot of stress on the tractor when you were using it and sooner or later something is going to break. In my opinion a person would be better off spending $6,000-8,000 for a used backhoe and forget the 3pt versions if you are going to use it more than a couple of times a year.

Chris: There was a long thread started by "JustJeff" about a month ago that dealt with this topic--the consensus was that they're a whole lot better than a shovel for light work, but not up to heavy digging. The basic problems are that (1) they're not attached firmly enough to the tractor to be useful in many applications and (2) because they're an "add-on" attachement, the tractor's hydraulic system usually isn't adequate to run one very fast. If you can pick one up for a couple of grand, it will probably pay for itself, but if you're doing heavy work such as stump digging, you're better off buying a piece of purpose-built equipment.

I have a Bush Hog Model 762 3-point back hoe. Have used it for ditches, septic tank holes, lateral lines for drain field, digging out farn roads for culverts, digging holes for disposal of rocks and steel scrap, etc. I reall works well. Do not try to use on stumps - bad idea. Recommend you get it set up with seperate hydrolic pump, powered off the PTO shaft. Mine is set up that way, has its own oil reservoir. This feature assures plenty of GPM for the backhoe, and makes it movable to any small tractor; even those with poor gpm hydrolic pump ratings. That means you have a MUCH larger market to re-sell it to; people with their n fords, small MF, ACs, just about all of them. I keep mine off the tractor, sitting on my concrete barn floor, can install by myself in about 15 minutes or less, remove in 10 minutes or less. The secret is the level concrete floor.
Good luck with yours. Don't listen to people like "goofus" he probably can't operate a hand held shovel, doesn't know which way to face the shovel blade.

Years ago I had a "LONG" 3 point BH. Bolted it up to an old Case DC. It would bounch even the DC around. I put in all my water line on the farm with it. Wish I still had it.

I have an Arps model 90 on a Case 311b. You can do practically anything a regular backhoe can except in smaller chunks and a lot more time. Trenching & loading is easy & fast. Digging larger stumps is slooooo w. Tractor weight is more important than hp.

Forget it if you are in a hurry or expect to use it for commercial work.

I never take mine off, seems like there is always something to dig, move, or lift. Also doubles as ballast.

Used price is $3-5K around here and well worth it.

Joe

I bought a new Woods model 750 a few years back. It worked great for the projects I purchased it for. Don't matter how hard the ground is. They would not be good for digging up stumps or tearing up concrete. Totally beat using a long handled shovel. Sold it after 4 years for what I had paid for it. In this area, nice used ones do not come on the market very often.

I have a Woods 1050. It's a wonderful machine. I use it on a John Deere 4030. Digs in hard ground with no problems. It will dig 10 and a half feet deep. It uses a pto operated pump. The hoe doesn't jerk the 10,000 pound tractor very much. I used it to put in a 1000 gallon concrete septic tank and the drain fields for it last summer. Way, way better than a shovel!

Chris, I think the wise Mr. Goof is correct. A bucket on the front of a tractor is a poor substitute for a loader and a hoe on the back of a tractor is no improvement. If you want to trench a little and grub around a bit by golly it beats a shovel. (Goof's mom-in-law not withstanding) Around here they seem to get 3-5 grand for them. The better models have brackets that place some of the stress on the forward frame. These seem pretty tractor specific though. I won't kid you I want one. But my rule of thumb is to not purchase equipment that is smarter than me. I'm sure I'd tear my SMTA up if I stuck one on it. I'd always be trying to do more than it was actually designed for. If you get one, lets us know how you make out.

They are not much more than a toy. For digging stumps, you would do a lot better with a mad mother n law, turned loose with a pick and shovel. goofus
