Hi Guys,

We are in the middle of one heck of a snowstorm here. We've gotten something like 2 feet since sunset last night.

When does a guy start worrying about snow-load factors of a roof?

This table is 4' in diameter and this is also the amount of snow that is up on my roof. Should I be up there diggin'?

Thanks for any input,

Allan

i have seen many barns come down this year in nw pa.
i had 2ft on the roof that didn't bother me too much but then we got freezing rain on top of it.
it completely sealed my plumbing vent pipe (3"dia)
i could barely tell where it was.
i would shovel if you can get on it safely.

If you have less then a 10/12 pitch roof then yes. You should get a snow rake and pull some of that snow off the roof, while it is snow and not ice.

Check with your local building code agency to see what the snow load is for your roof. You'll need to know what size rafters or trusses that you have under your roof and the thickness of the sheeting. They can tell you if you are safe or not. Good luck.

That looks like about as much snow as we got here in western nebraska. It realy piled up here about 2 foot on the level ground 6 and 7 foot drifts in places.

This has gotten a bit long. What has really happen to the old snow belt. We used to get that kind of snowfall in Southern Minnesota all the time. Not that I'm anxious to get out and plow some snow with the old JD, but I've only plow 3 thing again this year. Only plowed once last year. But my bigger concern is, we need the moisture. I'm an old farm boy, and I know the farmers need the moisture. But now I live on a lake, and it's about 3-4 foot lower than normal. Granted we live on a somewhat shallower part of the lake, but I'm getting tired of buying more dock sections for the last few years. Normally it about 5-5 1/2 ft. deep at the end of a 64 ft. dock. I was out 112 ft. last fall and only had 2 ft. of water at the end. But if we don't a lot of rain or snow, I'll have to add more this year. I know this isn't really tractor talk, but when the lake was at normal level, I put my boat in right in the back yard with 1 of my 3 John Deere's. Can't do it now.
Thanks for listening. I needed to vent a little and put my 2 cents worth in. Loren

all we got down here was a couple inchs, started out as rain yesterday morn. A good roof should support that much dry snow. watch for places it is drifted deeper. also long rafter spans can be a problem. Some of my sheds would not support that much snow but then we never get that kind of snow here. I have put extra posts under a roof where I thought there was danger of it coming in. The main thing is; don't fall off or have a heart attack shoveling.
