I have a 1750 Oliver gas that just this winter over a period of time, started carbon fouling the number one spark plug. The other five are burning greyish-white to white. Any thoughts?

My need to check valve clerance on that cyl.

I would purchase new plugs all the way around, then check for plug color after five minutes of running. Hard to see what is really going on with old plugs. as was suggested before, determain if it is oil fouling, too hot, carbon, could be timing. I have a wisconsin engine that was burning up the number four plug, while other all ran ok. I had the wrong distributor in the engine..now that is extreame, but is was all a timing issue...

You could try that #1 plug in another hole, or just renew it, to see if it is the plug causing the deposit. Or you could do a compression check to see if #1 is down and giving the problem. Does it do this at light load, or when hard at work? Is it running hot enough? Is it missing at all? Could be the plug, lead or distributor cap. Are connections tight?
Is it oil fouling on the plug, or just a light sooty deposit? Would give an idea of the fault.
Could (remote, but...) be a worn cam lobe not lifting the valve enough to run OK.
Just a few thoughts for you to go at. I am sure, with a bit of checking, you will either find the fault or at least be able give us a bit more of a specific problem to diagnose.
Let us know how what you find.
