Put my truck in reverse and it seemed to pull really hard. Gave it more pedal and it went but seemed almost like it was in mud. I let up on it and it seemed to move more freely but soon as I gave it more pedal it seemed to bind again. I shut it off and when I tried it again it did'nt do it. But later on that same day it pulled really hard in reverse again . Any suggestions?

Todd, I just thought of two other problems with that vintage E4OD transmission. The turbine hub inside the torque converter wanted to wear into the inside of the converter cover and cause all sorts of nasty things to happen. Diesel torsionals are very hard on the transmission especially to the converter during the lockup mode. The older open converters allowed the torsionals to be absorbed in the hydraulic converter coupling.

Also the switch on the side of the transmission (drivers side) surrounding the manual lever tends to want to get contaminated with dirt and water and short out. This causes the gear selection signal being sent to the computer to be in error and consequently incorrect elements are applied causing the lockup you describe. The switch is the easiest to change and costs about $40.

Good luck and hope this helps.

They may have solved the following two problems by 2000 or not?

Valve body gasket would blow, or leak between passages due to loose or broken valve body bolts.

Stator support would move where it's pressed into front pump, causing cross-leaks between passages.

Either of the above problems could cause forward and reverse to apply at the same time, binding up the transmission.

E4OD or 4R100 as they are refered to now had a mechanical diode problem back then. It should be covered.

Best suggestion I could give would be get out from under it and get ya a Chevy or GMC. I had more trouble out of one Ford I owned than every GM product I have owned. They live up to their nickname FoundOnRoadDead or FixOrRepairDaily. I don't plan on ever owning another one as I like driving something dependable.

GM's are perfect trucks right? Wrongo, last GMC I had (read we are "Professional Grade")a new truck, went back to the dealer under the lemon law, biggest piece of junk I have ever owned. Have had chevys that were good, Fords and still have the reliable Dodge Cummins, theres good and bad in all of them. I really don't think Ford became one of the largest companies on the planet because all they make is junk.

at least they are buying them back fixing their problems. They should have left the 7.3 alone and left it in their trucks.

Hi Todd,

The first thing to do on any problem with a puter driven equipment is too reset the puter, Disconnect the battery's (both) over night.

Fords says, passenger negitive first, then driver side negitive.

No, pulling fuse #15 is not the same.

If you still have a problem then it's a valid problem.

My fuel mileage took a dump a couple summers ago and I reset the puter and my mileage came right back. I now reset the puter every two months.

My 15000 mile fuel mileage average with pulling 16k GCW 6000 miles and pulling 28k GCW 450 miles;

************* 17.1mpg*************

First of all what is it an automatic, ZF etc. before a person can give you an informed answer.

It might be something loose in rear brakes, making it bind tighter as you try to speed up.
