Hi Gary,

What a mess. I really don't think you want to try and salvage the steel. Good quality steel has temper added at the last finishing stage of the part. Temper makes the steel return to near normal shape once stressed to maximum design. Temper is a form of heat treatment and is applied at about 500º then cooled quickly. To remove temper then you heat above 500º and cool slowly. And were talking a thru and thru heat soak, not just surface temps. So one has to guess which part got 100% thru and thru above 500º or use the part until it quickly wares out.

I would say the oil pan tar pretty much tells you what you have.

Hey Gary, I think if I were you I would get that 460 out of the pile, and even if you don"t get it running, paint it up and put some old rubber on it and make a yard ornament out of it. At least you will still get to see Dad"s tractor and it won"t go to the scrap yard. Just a thought, good luck and sorry about this, it"s horrible to see.

That must have been a hot fire. Don't give up on your dad'd tractor.Like someone else mentioned oil it down good until you can determine if it is repairable. If the antifreeze didn't all boil out motor may be salvagable. I am real sorry for your loss. stan

Sorry to hear of you and your brother's loss. Glad to hear it was insured, but that can never replace your dad's tractor. At least this was not a fire where there was a loss of life.

The 460 did run if thats what you mean. Oil in the pan turned to tar almost.

The fuel tanks on both tractors burned dry.

Might be a dumb question, but: Did the fuel in the tractors burn? I would assume that the fire melted a hose or filter, and the fuel ran out and burned on the ground.

Reason I asked, I have seen some raging fuel fires, that melted everything. There is a Freightliner down the road, that caught on fire, it melted everything from the frame rails up..

I would start soaking the old 460 with oil to keep the sheet metal from rusting could be used to restore a donar tractor you still have a lot of good parts to use

Gary,
Sad to see the pictures, and sorry this happened to a good old Iowa boy. (I"m guessing he lives close to you) I"d be just sick, if that was my equipment. It"s so much work, time, sweat and money to keep things running well and looking good. I hope things turn out okay finacially so he can replace them with tractors that are equivelent or even better

A painful sight as was stated. I had one of my tractors burned, not quite that bad though, that due to some idiot burning trash in the open.

Gary, sorry to hear and see your loss! I trust your brother finds his insurance to be what he thought it was-I had my truck stolen with most of my carpentry tools in it, and found out my insurance was not what I expected. That only compounds the loss! Greg

Sorry, that is a painful sight to see. Some people laugh but my house,garage and shed both have heat detectors tied into the monitored alarm system. For no good reason I've yet to finish the wet leg fire sprinklers in both areas and in the house. The shed will have full coverage 7 months of the year and partial the other 5 months. Just one little sprinkler head when the fire is small. Is enough to either extingush the fire. Or at least slow it down and prevent further spread past the sprinkler.
