My JD manual is telling me to set final drive bearing drag torque (bearing preload)to 170 FT LBS this seams to be overing tighting the bearings. Do you think the manual may be wrong? How do you set bearing preload? on final drive bearings?

If you are referring to the bolt that holds the planetary carrier onto the axle that has to be TIGHT. Thats called the jesus bolt becuse if it comes loose it's "Oh Jesus".There are shims under the planetary for bearing preload on the newer tractors that set bearing preload. I've never been into a 5020 final drive though.

That is the bolt, and mine came out, big problem. The 5020 preload is set with that bolt, and the bolt has a locking plate. I am trying to find the correct preload on that bolt.

you should tighten the bolt to 170 ft/lb, rotate the shaft or the housing several full turns, retighten to 170 lbs/ft and intall the lock plate. if you can't intall it either way, tighten the bolt some more until you can install the plate.
later model final drives were shim adjusted and the 1 inch bolt was tightened to 520 ft/lbs.
in order to use the shim adjustment on your 5020 you need machined shaft end and planetary washer and a new special bolt. go with the original settings.

Deere has changed the preload procedure a time or two, at least on some tractors. Do you have a local dealer who would copy the latest version of the preload procedure for you?
