I'm planning to convert my farmall M to 12v and was wondering what kind of alt to use (the standard GM type or something else) and mostly where to put it. I was hoping not to have to cut up the hood as it is in perfect condition.

Contrary to what I hear alot, there is room to put a GM alternator under the hood of an M without modifying the hood at all. I put mine on the same bracket as the generator was on. I did have to fashion a new top bracket, but it wasn't anything all that dificult. I never did figure out how to make one fit under the hood of an H though..... .

I have the same setup use 3 wire alternator only i use the pulley off of the generator. You have to drill and tap the end of the shaft to put the bolt into hold pully on then you can adjust the belt like on the generator. And it will fit under the hood of an h close but works.

I have done it on an H, I used a shorter belt, and installed the belt on the pulley, then mounted the bolts. It stretch tight, and the alternator was right up against the engine, but it did work using the standard one wire Delco alternator

third party image

install a "idler" pulley under it and you can adjust the belt with no problem.

sony mvc-fd85 not the cheapest in the box. uses the 3 1/2" disk fro picture storage. can get 18 per disk. had it 2 years now- am sure they are cheaper.

I change all of the farmall sI get that are 6 volt by putting a one wire alternater on them. I do this by turning the original generator bracket over, putting a piece of allthread through both holes, double nut the alt. and run the belt over it. most of the time I don't even have to use the slack adjuster.
