I need to buy a used tractor for small hobby farm. Need one with a bucket and have about $5000 to spend on tractor and equipment. I think something about the size of an 8N but am unfamiliar with most tractor brands, etc. Any suggestions would help and locating one in Washington state would be appreciated. Thanks. Ron

5000 is too much to spend on an 8N. Get something newer with "live PTO" and "live hydraulics". You will be glad later on.

This will sting a little but I will say it anyway.
Do you really NEED a tractor for your hobby farm, or do you really just WANT one?

You've posted that you need one, so I suppose that you really do. Far more want rather than need.

A loader on a tractor is one handy piece of equipment that can save a lot of back breaking work. Truth be known however, how many really use one all that much on a hobby farm that is up and running on an even keel?

The savings from purchasing a loader tractor might allow you to buy more tractor initially. Can you get by with a 3 pt. crane on the back for lifting?
Can a rear scoop move the dirt you need rather than having a loader do it?

Those little Fords are so much fun to use and are so loveable, however most are really over priced for the amount of work they can do easily.

Want or need could also be asked of many implements also. Dollar expenditure vs. hand labor. Would digging 10 post holes a year justify a several hundred dollar digger to save hand labor?

Want vs. need. Only you can figure that out from your own situation. After all, we boys do tend to NEED our fair share of toys.

sorry greenbeanman.
Are you sure you are not greenbeanLady in disguise.
Sure sounds like mine 12 years ago when I NEEDED a tractor, all the same reasoning. However you did straighten out before the end of your post, only to falter again. We do need our toys don't we. Here is how I got mine... bought a piece of land, said to the wife one day, I need a tractor, what for she says, I um aah say to make path in woods, she says never mind spending the money I'll come over and help you, well bless her intentions she lasted two days. I did get my tractor. All I did was cut the brush with a weed wacker w/10" saw blade. Made a pile moved 10' another, and another, she kept up so I moved 20' further, and further from the burn pile, finley
she said you need a tractor!

Have a good evening,

Respectfully, I have to disagree with GBMan about the value of a loader. I find my JD 1020 and the 48 loader is the handiest tool combination on my small farm. There seems to be no end to the applications you can come up with for a loader!

In addition to moving "horse exhaust" and snow plus dirt, gravel and the other usual tasks, I depend on the loader to move hay into the loft storage areas, as well as the other things that need storage... there's always other things!

I use the tractor, loader and a small chainsaw as my "Swedish Cherry Picker" and bow up limbs that are 20ft up! ...wife at the hydraulic controls, me in the bucket... cussing, praying and wittling away! ...a real test of marital harmony!)

Moving brush, tools, fencing supplies, etc. are so frequent that the loader only comes off at haying time.

In fact, the task of removing the 48 loader takes five minutes and I STILL won't remove the loader, because I know I will be using it everyday.

GBMan is correct in his assertion that "wants and needs" must be carefully matched to you budget. I contend you don't need an Gator or ATV. You don't need a snowblower, chipper, tiller, and most other Hobby Farm implements being sold by your suburban farm equipment/supply stores.

But, you do need a dependable loader! And, by the way, a dependable tractor to attach to the loader is a good idea too.

Dirt scoop and the crane work real well. Three point hitch pulls old post. Many people think a loader is a bull dozer and it's not.

Ron, if you are in Western Washington, your best bet is to check the Little Nickel (it's online at Link Around here a 8N Ford is going to go for between $2500 and $4000. I would suggest looking for something more like a International 300 Utility or 350 Utility. There's quite a few 300U's around here, and they generally sell for a little less than a 8N but are much more capable, with independent PTO, live hydraulics and more power. I'm an IH man, so I can't really help you on other makes, but I'm sure you will get responses telling you which JD or Allis or etc to look for. A Massey 135 would be a good choice, as Pitch mentioned. Good luck to you.

I think that a Massey-Ferguson 135 or 235 woul probably do you good. Probably won't leave anything for implements though. What you want is a small utility size tractor with power steering live hydraulics and live PTO. Problem with this is that everyone wants a small utility with these features so good ones demand a good price. You might be better served pricewise by a larger machine, because a lot of hobbyists and homeowners don't have the room to operate them or are scared of the cost of operation.

Something like that would probably do most of the work I need to do. Does it have a 3-point hitch and pto?

Allan, what brand is that loader? I have a bucket which appears to be the same, and I would like to know what it is. Thanks in advance. Paul

Hi Paul,

It is a Farmhand F-11 loader and it is mounted on my '51H. I use it daily and it is kinda fun to operate.

Newer models were designated the F-27 and at one time, Farmhand made the bigger F-10, which of course, wrapped completely around the tractor.
