When I recently started up my 1949 Ferguson, I forgot to turn the gas on at the sediment bowl. After several minutes it stalled, and I havent been able to start it back up. The battery isn't dead, and I even checked to make sure that the fuel line wasn't plugged, but it still wont start. If anyone has any suggestions, I would appreciate it.

I'm presuming the engine turns over and there is fuel in the gas tank.
First make sure that you have an adequate supply of fuel to the carburetor. There is a big plug at the bottom of the carb. With the valve at the sediment bowl wide open, open this plug while holding a can under to catch the gas. You should get a continuos stream of gas, like a cow peein' on a flat rock. If you don't then you have a blockage in your fuel sytem. There are three filters in the fuel delivery system; one at the top of the fuel supply pipe above the valve in the tank, one in the sediment bowl, and the "secret filter" in the fuel supply elbow on the carb.
If your fuel supply passes the first test, you need to check the spark. Take the high tension wire in the center of the distributor cap off, hod it a quarter of an inch away from a good ground , turn the ey on and engage the starter. You should see a fat blue spark at the coil high tension lead. If you don't then you have an ignition problem. Check the point gap first and make sure the points shine and are not corroded. If the points are OK, do a voltage check with the points closed, starting at the battery connection to the key switch, across the key switch, to the battery side of the ballast resistor, to the coil side of the ballast reistor, to the points. You should have 4-5 volts to ground at the battery side of the coil. You should have 12 volts at each point up to the battery side of the ballast resistor. If'n you don't, start checking the connections to make sure they are clean, bright abd tight. Report back with your results.

P.S. You should ask this question on the Ferguson Forum.

I checked the starter, and that was fine as well. I am wondering if it could be the coil. The tractor was recently converted to 12v.

Nick,
Is it a gas or diesel motor? On my MF135 gas if it runs out of gas i have to let it set a few minutes(10?)and them it will start up.Have you checked to see if you are getting spark to you spark plugs?A bad condenser will cause no spark also.
Hope this helps alittle.Good luck.It can't be much since it was running okay.

Jerry covered about everything except the carb float valve may be stuck shut. A gentle rap on the carb may release it.

Good point, Ray. Hey, where in Indiana are you from. I was born a Hoosier but have lived in the West since graduating from Purdue in 1965.

Near Linton Jerry. We must be close to the same age, I graduated from HS in 1960.

AH, yes Ray, 1942 was a good year to be born! I grew up in Gary and graduated from high school in 1960 also. My road atlas tells me that Linton is southwest of Bloomington. Pretty country down there as I remember it.

You've probably got a lot more experience with tractors and farm machinery than I do by the sounds of your replies. I got my first experience as an equipment mechanic in the steel mills, working on what they called "tractors" - big rigs that moved 20 ton steel coils around the mill (Solid tires, propane fueled Continental sixes that ran electric generators that powered the electric traction motors, lots of hydraulics). Sure a lot different then these Ferguson's.

I spent my profesional career in the aircraft industry and ranched cattle on the side til retirement. Now my wife and I are developing a small ranch in western Montana. Workin' our behinds off and enjoying every minute of it!
Good talkin'to an fellow Hoosier.
