Mornin' All,

After figuring in my original purchase price, the cost of freight to get it here, and all repair costs to date, my latest fix means that I have just crossed the "what it's really worth" value of this old tractor.

Does this mean that I'm doing things about right in regards to dealing with old iron? )grin(

Allan

See my post below about the "Rev. James"? I'm trying to sell my '44 SC to stop just the kind of bleeding you're talking about. Of course as soon as I do, I'll probably jump right into another one. You can't have too many tractors, can you?

Hi Les,

I was decussing this very issue with one of my neighbors the other day and he was wanting to know whatever possesed me to buy this old thing.

I explained to him that I really miss the farm and that I bought it just because I wanted the darned thing.

He told me, "Well, I guess I know what ya mean, a guy really can't even built a good pot of coffee without havin' an old tractor out in the yard". :>)

What I want to know is: How can you stand to part with one of 'em? Does this trait come later on down the line?

Have a good one,

Allan

Well, I once thought like that. After I drove this thing home a couple months ago on a cold, windy, snowy day, freezing everything I hold near and dear, and felt a distinct "clunk" under my feet every time that right wheel made a complete turn...and then when it wouldn't start because the magneto needs attention and I started adding up all I've spent on it and it's still nothing but a rusty old hulk that can't be depended on without several hundred more of my $$ being spent to make it so, that's when I decided to cut my losses and maybe buy something that won't be considered a "parts" tractor.
Besides, I have two other nice running tractors and one of them is even pretty (my '48 Farmall M).

Fabio, Mi Amigo, Is that in Pesos or Dollars? At the rate of inflation in Argentina, that figure could change drasticaly in the time it takes to read this post.

I know this is not a tractor, I collect them too, but I have a 1971 Mustang that I am rebuilding, value, fixed up nice $1500.00-2500.00. I have got over $4000.00 in it now, and am not even half finished. I have a littel over $2500.00 in my IH "M", way too much in some old garden tractors. So I would say you are right on track to being as crazy as me and the rest of the collectors and restorers in the world.

Jim,

My wife tells me that I have "tractors on the brain".

But, I can just stand and look at one of these old units that has been all fixed up and all those good memories just "flood" back over me.

I live 10 miles outside of town and when I roaded the tractor home the other day, that screamin' diesel yanked me right back to when I was in my thirties. Happiest 30 minutes I've had in a long, long time.

An old piece of iron is all it takes to make me happy. Maybe I need therapy! :>)

Now, wait just a darned minute!!

That is exactly what I had planned to do and now you've gone and spilled the beans!

I figure after I get the thing in the field, a nickel here and a nickel there wouldn't be noticed too much by the War Dept. here in this house..... .. :>)

I wish I had you all for my neighbors,

Allan

Allan, Looks to me like you are right on target. There is no reason to think that at the present rate of output that by completion you should have the normal cash outlay of $2.00 spent for every $1.00 market value. Yep, I'd say you are doing everything right and should be right on target

Alan;

I think you have to have about 3 times what they are worth to fix em right. And yes,if you move off the farm take a tractor with you and all the goodies that go with it. Sure wish I had.

steve
