Hi, I am in need of a pickup truck to do misc hauling, pulling a tractor on trailer short distance, etc....cant afford much...need to know if this will work for my needs....I came across a 1983 Ford F-250. It has a 301 ? engine out of a 1977 Ford LTD, instead of the 351 engine that I think it would have had from the factory....the engine in there now has 70,000 miles....4 wheel drive works, auto trans good shape. My question is how does the 301 engine compare to the engine that should be in there...will this truck still be able to pull a trailer, etc...someone said it might be better than what was in there from the factory...I dont know about that...can you help?
Under the hood was a sticker that said somehting about a 5.7 liter engine specs....this truck is less than $1000.
Thanks for your help...

I have a bunch of old fords. I'd look for a F350 or F250 that already has a receiver hitch and a brake controller package installed. Figure out the rear end ratio you want/need as well before hand. You can probably find a running/workable truck with all the above for $1500. Yah the motor has to run but my experience has been it easier find good replacement motors(for low $$) than trannies,rear ends, etc...

Yep, I just want something to haul once every six months..can get this for $500- 600. It does not have overdrive...I think the 302 will work if I take it easy...not doing anything major...if something happens to the engine from overworking...oh well, there goes only $500...not a big deal, xfer case and tranny are probably worth that much.

Thanks for the input.

It will do more than you think it will, have 86 F 250 with 351 and have hauled I would guess 15,000# loads over 300 mile

Kinda like driving a Volkswagen bus, slow but you'll get there.

The 302 will be OK for hauling in the box but it won't handle much on a trailer. If you are only hauling something on a trailer very infrequently and not too far you'll get by. The 302 is a good engine but not enough power for hauling. A 351 is the minimum you'll want for that. If you could find a good old F250 of similar age with a 6.9 diesel you would probably like it. Not to be compared with todays diesels but very reliable and better on fuel than either the 302 or 351. I had one for many years, put on almost 400,000 miles when it blew a head gasket (2 years ago) and I parked it because the body was shot. I put on 1 injector pump, 1 injector, 2 water pumps, a fuel supply pump, an alternator, several starters, 1 rear end, and no work to the transmission. That's all I did to the drive train in all those years and miles; plus the usual tires and brakes.

what kind of auto tranny is in it, have an 86 f250 with a 302 efi and an auto/overdrive tranny. this truck worked just to haul around my 16' Rainbow equipment trailer let alone any thing on it.

My feeling is wait til you find a F250 or F350 with at least a 351 or 460 on gas or propane.

Ive got a powerstroke diesel , its a whole different game for pulling now.

I think there lots of older trucks out there , hold off until you find the one you want!

Like Roy says, I feel any decent pickup is worth a 1000. How it tows will depend mostly on it rear axle ratio.

Mark;
The motor is likely a 302 and are pretty decent but not my first choice for a truck. I think the '83 would of had a 351m (modified) which doesn't easily change with the 302. A 351w (windsor)to a 302 is a pretty easy swap. All that being said if you can drive it home, it is well worth the the grand. Nothing wrong going a little slower while towing. Good luck Roy
