Are generators and altenators interchangeable?

You can convert from one system to the other, but generators and alternators are not freely interchangable. Each has it's own wiring, regulator, (and sometimes) ground polarity requirement.

Bob, Gary hit the nail right on the head. There are conversion kits, but do not try taking an alternator and putting it in place of a generator one for one. I'm not familiar with any 12 VDC generators or 6 VDC alternators. And, when it comes to alternators, many or even most have changed polarity from negative ground to positive ground, so an alternator isn't necessarily an alternator either. Mark.IN.

Some early '60s vehicles have 12 volt generators. Like my '64 Rambler American.
