Narrow front V-shape?

Knowing that I had grown up on a small farm, a friend of mine asked me why the tractors he recently saw in his community parade had their front wheels slanted into a V-shape. I had to admit to him that I didn't know. To the best of my recollection, both the narrow front John Deere "B" and the International "H" that I learned to drive on had vertical front wheels.

Any kind person out there care to educate us?

All narrow fronts have some v-angle to them. In fact, I believe all wide fronts, as well as your car & truck front ends, have a little bit of inward angle to them. Perhaps it was just more noticable on this particular model of tractor?

Having the front wheels tilted in at the bottom places the weight nearer the base of the stub axles too, reducing stress on them. I know you can turn the wheels around as was mentioned, this would increase the bending load on them.

The toe-in of the narrow fronts provides for easier steering and more clearance when driving down through rows of small plants. They also stay in a furrow better when set narrow, and will practically steer themselves in deep furrows. Just about all tricycle tractors had provision for flipping the wheels around backward and setting them wide for more mud clearance when doing sloppy work, though.

The "V" prevents stones (and mud) from lodging between the tires. As the wheels turn they "eject" whatever's caught between them.

Well, not really, at least when they're set narrow together. I spent a bunch of time on a tricycle Farmall "M" in hog lots and the like, and without the wheels set out, you'll get a solid mass of mud between the wheels that the tires will not "eject", to the point that it will come squirting out between the hubs and rims. If that were the reason, they'd have set the wheels out wide from the factory so nothing could get caught in there to begin with. The "V" is really for row clearance and ease of steering.
