861, There are only a few manufacturing plants out there. They ALL have their "top" brands and their "knockoffs". For instance, Tempstar is made by Carrier with the SAME components in the SAME factory with the SAME warranty! NOT the same price tho! 20-40% less depending on your wholesaler's volume. Bottom line is... research. Also, sounds like you intend to stay a while so consider the payback on the more efficient 12 and 13 SEER units. Cost more initially but, cost of electricity is going up daily. AND, go with LP gas heat if you can. One last thing... MOST manufacturers WON'T warranty an owner installed unit other than the compressor. As you read below, screw type is best. Don't know if anyone even uses the all aluminum coils anymore. Alum fins and copper tubing is the norm. Buy the outside air intake option if it is offered. Cheap and lets you "fresh air" the house when the weather is nice. Good luck!

I have a Trane XL1000 that is 15 years old. It is a split unit heat pump. Nothing has ever been done to it! Depending on where you live should determine whether you need a heat pump or gas pack. In my opinion, a heat pump is the best for mild climates such as N.W. Alabama where I live. Cheapest way to heat when temp is 40 degrees, and starts being less effecient at lower temps then 40.

Hi Ford,

I've been retired too long to recomend a brand.

A scroll compressor can't be beat and will last the longest with least amount of problems. Cooper coils are best over aluminum, other than that it's find a Company that knows what there doing as not installed correct will cause more problems than a bad brand name.

I had a new system(electric air-conditioning unit and gas furnace) put in 8 years ago. The brand I put in was Goodman. They market units under a couple of other names; Janitrol and Amana come to mind. I haven't had any problems and the air-conditioning gets a good workout every year(I live in Charleston SC). The contractor that installed it said I saved 1000$ off of the price of a name brand(Carrier, Trane etc...) The compressor in the A/C unit is a Bristol which is supposed to be one of the best in the business. Just my two cents worth.

Had a Carrier installed 3 1/2 years ago and it has broke down twice. Had to pay for repairs both times as they only warrenteed it for one year. Definitely do not recommend a Carrier!!!

I am a senior project manager with a general and mechanical contractor. Most reputable contractors will sell and install any brand of equipment you want. The manufacturers will wholesale to any of them. My personal preference is Lennox or Armstrong for residential and Trane for commercial or indutrial installations. Carrier makes excellent equipment but the knowledge and support provided by their distributors is a joke. Can't say any of the major players makes poor equipment. Which ever contractor you feel comfortable with will work.

Had HORRIBLE experience with Lennox--both oil burner and LPG. They don't stand behind their products. Had a Lennox oil burner and after about 6 years the heat exchanger went. Replaced it with LPG. Six years later, same thing. Mine was one of 11 furnaces from one dealer (sequential serial numbers) that developed cracks in the heat exchanger. They offered to cover 50% of the cost of the exchanger, not even shipping, not to mention labor. One furnace I could understand, but 11? That was a quality control problem, plain and simple. I junked the Lennox and put in a Trane. That was 15 years ago and not a single problem.

While not a direct answer to your question you might want to consider my answer. If you ae remodeling now is the time to add thickness to the studs and insulation. Add to the atic insulation too. Do a good job with no gaps and no stuffed in insulation, install a good vapor barrier and you will be $$$ ahead for the rest of the time you live in that house. It will be more comfortable, easier and cheaper to heat.

Contractors will often tell you the best one is the best one for them... the one they get the biggest kickback on!

The answer lies in which dealer (servicing dealer) has the best reputation in your area. Your local coop or electric/gas utility or propane dealer can make you aware of good options for your area and the utilities often have special deals on high-efficency furnaces and A/C units. Also ask about "dual-fuel" programs. I'm one one and get my electric for half price.

ford861;

Are you going to get bids from the mechanical contractors or are you doing this yourself. If your are taking bids then go from there. I would think they are all good units. I went with Lennox for several of my houses and never had a problem with them.

I agree, you can hardly go wrong - all are well respected names. I'd base my decision on the three based on price & warranty. I would definately buy a high efficency model (90% +). They run about 20% more but all it takes is two or three years in my part of the country to get you money back.

Of course they are all going to give you reasons one is better then the other - like asking a Chevy dealership if their pickups are better then Ford.
