Ive heard people say they want there brush hog blades dull,is this an old farmers tale or an reality.

Dull frays the top of the bigger stubs. Saves many a tire puncture on the next pass.

depends on what you are cutting
pasture only somwhat sharp
yard very sharp
brush, clearing land, then dull this will splinter the tree trunks and they will rot away alot faster

Read the owner's manual. Mine says the cutting edge should be 1/8" dead flat and that's the way I grind them. Too sharp and you risk snapping a blade when it catches a tree.

Brush hogging is not finish mowing but,the blades should have a degree of sharpness. Usually this means a rather steep angle and not too thin of a cutting edge so that when an obstruction such as a rock or stump is hit the edge will not curl or be nicked badly. Being too dull causes the grass to be shreaded or torn off and leaves a poor looking mow job.
