Yes, this gets close to being a political post, but government here has killed the tractor show. Here we have counties as divisions, some counties have cities and occasionally a city will be in more than one county. Club I once belonged to had good show that grew each year. I let my membership lapse due to lack of time to devote to the club. We had the show in one county, adjacent to the one in which I live. When the club needed to expand the show area, it was discovered that the zoning never permitted the show at all. County commissioners, one of whom is a farmer, refused to change the zoning. Horse shows OK, tractor shows not. So the club moved the show to the county where I live, West of the original location. Most of the roads to the new site are winding and only 18 feet wide, just 9 feet per lane. Attendance and exhibits dropped sharply. After 3 years, the club went to a third county, North of the original location. Location within the city limits of small "city". Arrangements for the new location in the works for a year. Town officials present at the meetings, etc. Two weeks before the show (all ads, show books, mailings, tickets, etc. all done) the mayor says that each vendor at the show must pay $75.00 fee. Club says OK, they will pay. Then chief of police says must pay for 4 off-duty officers of his dept to be on duty at all times, 24 hours per day for the duration of the show, $30.00 per officer per hour, $120.00 per hour total. That canceled the show, not sure if they will ever have another. They refunded ad money, etc. Big loss. Probably someone here will recognize the exact situation I have described and be familiar with the show and club involved. Government is not, and does not have, the solution to our problems. More likely, the problem IS the government. Be sure to vote this year.

I guess we are lucky. Our local goverment is very good with us (at least now). We pay them a fair amount for police, but not what you are. The township has a large gathering permit fee we must pay, but it is not out of line. We own our own grounds and do our own security checks, but the local constable or county officer comes out and drives through a couple times a day. They even help us with traffic if it gets to backed up. This will be our 48th show and we seem to be getting along fine, I just hope it stays that way. Well, good luck with your show. You are welcome at ours on labor weekend in WI if you want. Hope to see you, and best of luck

A couple years ago at a local big show on a private grounds, the organizers crated a "trolley" type deal to pull with a tractor back and fourth all day bringing in people from the parking lot. With the older folk and those of us who have a hard time getting around for one reason or another, it was a very popular thing. After being government inspected prior to the show, it was determined that it did not have the legal size railing or steps that fit the code. It was too late to fix it so it was not legally allowed to be used ...resulting in NO TRANSPORTATION for any people hard up on getting around. See how much our government "helped" the handicap that weekend. One kind gesture of a club and regulation had to spoil it.

We had some of our older club members who did not do so well on their feet driving 4 passenger golf carts for handicapped/elderly transportation. Worked beautifully, the drivers understood the passenger's situation. The drivers also were useful themselves.

Hey guys, I go to bike rallys all summer, and we have shuttles so the 4-wheelers won't run over the bikes, and these are usually just 16' car trailers, sometimes with sides, sometimes without. We rent the facility for the weekend, charge an admission at the gate, and that makes it a private affair, and the cops go chase chicken thieves and stuff. Outside the gates we're theirs, but inside they can go fish, and they seem to respect our space and we respect theirs. Just some thoughts. Don't knock them, I get to have so few any more. Harley

Bus Driver, Your situation surprises me not in the least. And it will only get worse as we allow government to grow. There are those who think that the only greed comes from Corporate Big Wigs, but there is greed everywhere, especially when given free reign to implement it. We had a situation recently in Detroit where the AFL CIO planned on having a convention in Cobo Hall which is owned by the City of Detroit. In order for the AFL-CIO to contract for use of Cobo, they were obligeed to pay pre-established union scale for security, electricians, physical maintainance, custodians, plumbers, and parking attendants. This was as per agreement between unions and the City which was non negotiable. The end result was that AFL-CIO decided that they couldn't afford to pay such high union scale for those services and opted to hold the convention in Cleveland instead. The convention in Detroit was thus derailed by greedy unions and greedy government. Both ended up losers. Your situation is a microcosm of the reality of government regulations. They drive business and events away more than they attract. how soon will it be before government decides it can get its grubby hands on a Family picnic at the park.

It's rather interesting that the union will not pay union scale wages.

Every tractor show I've been to has been on private property, located not in any municipality, and zoned agricultural. Bottom line, the county cannot interfere in any way with any agricultural use of the property, including tractor shows, plow days, auctions, nothing.

Laws may vary but you might want to look into it further.

Of course then the trial lawyers will ruin it. I dont want a tractor show on my place. Too much liability. A few miles from here there was a farm stock tractor pull on private property, flywheel shattered and some folks got hurt. Out of court settlements for the limits of the guys coverage and then, because he held an unlicensed 'entertainment event (tractor shows and pulls were ruled 'non agricultural') they got him on zoning and license fee taxes.

I agree- seems like the best way to get something done is to do it in a way such that the guvment doesn't even have the opportunity to "help".

Hi Bus,

Yes, I agree.

This is the year we all certainly must make it to the polls to assure that we kept the guy in office who will keep his eye on the ball and handle the really important things that affect us all.

Let's not get lazy and let this weak challenger sneek in by accident.

Allan

Those people have been fighting in the middle east since before crist and it wasnt to smart to get involved over there. Your pretty good at saying what so and so will do or would have done. You never know till they do and Kerry or Gore might have been the greatest Pres's ever but I dont know till I see and Ive seen what Bush has done. There was just something on the news this morning about a state balancing it's budget and part of that was how many they removed from welfare roles. Now where do you think these people went? They just disappeared, quit eating, got a $30k year job? How many of your friends and relatives are without a job?

Sure didn't mean to offend you and I am not a political person.

But, I feel we all better be waking up to the fact that we are tetering right on the edge of WWIII here and what is at stake for all of us in this country and around the world.

I am not offended just trying to keep politics off of here. Yep a lot closer to WWIII than we were 3 years ago. Regardless of who's fault.

Tell ya what Ben,

If your boy would have kept an eye on the store intead of his hands hangin' on to his paper shuffler's ears, we wouldn't be in this mess.....

Nothin' against ole Bill, but he flat dropped the ball on this one.

That's the trouble with the loyal opposition, it seems. If they had any sense, they'd set this contest out this year and let the men take care of the scrap.

Then, in 2008, we can get back to handin' out the checks to the "Po folks" if the "no fighting" set so desires.

Signed,

'Bout had it

We all like to see lower taxes, but like services too. Lot of these budget cuts get lot of publicity and the costs are passed down. When you get to local government, they take the heat. What really makes a person sick is that they still had money for their favorite "pork" on top. Just keep our eyes and minds open and VOTE. It's our duty. Bill

Ihave to agree with Ben and Adam, nearly. Whether we want to admit it or not or even have our government declare it, this is WWIII. I am saddened every day when we hear of more deaths of our troops, and the senseless beheadings by Terrorists. That is all they are, terrorists. They do not fight for their country or for anyones rights to as good a life as they can make for themselves. We all need to start looking around and doing our best to get all the facts before we decide to condemn our presence in Iraq or Afganistan or anywhere else in the world we might be trying to eliminate terrorists. If we don't, then we all need to start carrying guns and start watching over our shoulders as they will soon enough be among us in force. They probably already have a presence here in the U.S. and bowing to them and their demands will only increase their desire to hit us here where we live. Sorry for the long post and the "political" sound of it. As was said by others, prepare youselves for this election and vote. Bob D. (La)
