To buy or not to buy...

I'd post this on the Deere page but it's not really about the make of the tractor.

My wife and I think differently. She buys something and it immediately has no cash value to her. I buy something and I figure it'll have value when I get bored with it and want to be rid of it. This is where we have some strong discussions on her spending habits vs. mine.

So here it is - I have the opportunity to buy either one of 2 A's or a 60 from a customer of mine. The A's were bought new in '49 and '51 and the 60 was bought used 30 years ago. The last one to run was the '51 A and that was two years ago. The 60 hasn't in 5 and the '49 A in seven. All three have 4 row cultivators. I think the price is right but my wife thinks not. Do I buy one of the tractors with her lukewarm "whatever" or keep the peace and miss an opportunity to buy a two banger project tractor at a good price?

By the way, I have very, very little experiance with two cylinder Deeres. I grew up on a 4020, 4430, 4640, and 1086.

One must always remember that when a lady says "no" she means "maybe". When she says "maybe" she means "yes". But if she says "yes", she's no lady. What I'm trying to say is: "a lady never says yes". ? !

Get er done! "Whatever" is yes in Capital Letters with my wife. If I didn't take that answer as yes, I'd have no tractors. Instead I have, well lets leave it at enough to keep me busy for several years.

Bill, Have you thought about taking the Missus on a long weekend getaway, with all the trimmings just about a week before you pull into the yard with a toy? She may still give you the why and whatfor's, but the previous weekend's gesture should be fresh enough in her mind that when you mention it, she may mellow right out. Its when they think you are spending money for yourself and ignoring them that creates the animosity.

Are you kidding???
A "whatever" should be good for at least two of the three.

My wife gives me a "no, we don't need another" and that is good enough to bring one home.

You're really looking for Trouble? For tractor suggest 60- after its running use it for large garden tractor for wife, teach for to cultivate sweet corn and bush beans. 60 may have powersteering while A's probably don't, live PTO and better Hydraulics. Hand clutch can be learned- be careful! Brother uses JD60 a lot when left leg is almost unusable. Be prepared to spend some more money for her birthday presents and write 'Dear Abby'. RN
