Hey Dean. Thought I would share a bit of friendly advise. I tried all of the home remedies offered here about hooking wires together, getting resistors from Radio Shack, and everything else. In the end, I went to Duey's site and downloaded his wiring diagram. I purchased a three wire alternator and a 12 volt coil with resistor. I took cutters and removed every wire on my tractor. After taking the tank and cowling off, I rewired my complete tractor in about four hours. I am a mechanical idiot, but the first time I hit the key she popped right off and she has been humming every since. By removing all of that old 6 volt wire, I now have a system that is clean, resistant free and will give me another 55 years of good service. It is a pain in the a** to be fiddling around with wiring while you are out in the field. His address is ttp://dueyschutter.freeservers.com/photo3.html>
I am sure he does not mind my sharing it with you. You can ask him questions by E mail if you go to his site. Good luck.

I had my Chevy Alternater rebuilt when I restored my IH350U last year. When the shop found out it was for a tractor, they put in a 1 wire system designed especially for tractors. Starts charging at lower rpm and more vibration and dust resistant. Cost me a whopping $5 extra. ($45 total) Well worth the money. Ran the one wire to the ammeter terminal. Wiring finished. Works perfectly.

It's easy. Take all the wires from your old regulator and connect them together. Install the alternator, take both of the wires that were connected to the generator and connect them to the alternator "B" terminal. Connect a wire from the alternator "2" terminal to the alternator "B" terminal, or to the starter soliniod "B" terminal. Connect a wire from the alternator "1" terminal to anything that has 12 volts when the key is on, such as the resistor ahead of the coil. You'll need to put a diode or a resistor in between the "1" terminal and your 12-volt source to prevent backfeeding into the ignition circut. I did a 460 just like this, it worked great.

I converted a VAC to a 12v/3 wire alternator years ago and, not knowing about using a diode in the 'exciter' feed, I hooked it to the 'start' terminal on a standard, keyed ignition switch. Since I'm still using the original push-to-start switch I've got to momentarily turn the ign. switch to 'start' after the engine is running to excite the alternator but it still works fine.
