Have you ever checked out the off-topic post forum here at YT? Did today for the first time and although it seems like a good idea, it's pretty obvious that nobody much uses it. I think the last post for the OT Tractor Talk section (which is probably the busiest) was June 21st and that one got a response on June 24th. Most of the posts do not get any responses. Maybe it would be better if all the separate OT forums funneled into one OT location. Anyways, just wondering what some of you guys think. I don't mind OT posts on the regular forum, especially in the Tractor Talk section where most of them probably show up. Things like trucks, trailers, fences, crops, dogs, gophers, propery rights, etc. I think those are all valid posts. When we get into politics, religion and other similar categories then things get a bit ugly.

I haven't been able to find the OT area. Then again, I can't find the link out of the "Todays' Tractor" area either.

Knowing that that Tractor Talk is typically related to just that, with occasional OT posts about..., and knowing that some get upset because Tractor Talk gets too cluttered, I went there once and posted (the second from the top) when I woke up to find out that the UN wrote Caterpillar a threatening letter because they'd sold Isreal some D10 Cats, and then Isreal had them armored plated and used them to knock down some homes in the Gaza Strip. Well, knowing that it was a very political situation, and not wanting to offend anyone, I went to "OT" and posted. I even got as politically correct as I could and didn't mention Caterpillar or D10 Cat. No replies. So, either I figured either the topic stunk, or... Anyway, I love tractors as much as anyone, and if someone wants to dicuss something other than them from time to time, personally, I don't have a problem with it. But, when it gets too volitale with name calling and stuff, well then I don't mind going over to see what new tips there might be on the old Allis or Massey. Just my two cents. Mark Krzyzanowski

Your last sentence is right. I posted a reply to a reply in February 2003, jordingdga@illicom.net told me to "DROP OUT." I did, and haven't posted here since then.

I guess the consensus is to remain off this board.

Well I have never visited it because I didn't know it existed. I didn't even find it until you told where to in a thread below. I'll place the blame on my bifocals.

I use the forums list or the menu on the left.
Thanks for the heads up.

I went to the off topic site when Kim talked about it. I saw that it was not used much so I do not visit any more. If I have a tractor question or want to talk tractor problems I go to the board for my tractor brand.
I consider the Tractor Board to be the front porch of the local feed or convenience store where locals visit to talk tractors and country things. I find it very informative to talk to others that have the same interest as I do whether it be tractors; gardening; well pump repair or just a good joke you heard. When it gets political or religious that is when it goes to far.
I think it is a very good idea to put O/T on your post so others that are not interested can pass them by. If you look at past post I think you will see about 40-50% are off topic so I feel others feel the same way as I do.

Well John I'm going to jump in on your side. I consider the participants in these boards my friends in whom I confide. I trust their candid responses and know something about them as I see the different postings about different topics and see how they fit in.

Also I know they share a lot of my feelings about farm related subjects and yes there are more things to a farm besides tractors and all. Sometimes the wife gets mad at you and you need to get your feathers tucked back in place and this is the place to do that.

Besides, these sites get frequented sometimes several times daily which shows interest. That brings responses in a timely manner. And there is diversity....you get all kinds of answers; some you like and some you don't but maybe the ones you don't like are the best for you.

So I'll OT my imputs and let the disinterested pass them by.

Mark

John, In all due respect, I've heard some of my best political debates at the feed store, grain elevator, and fertilizer plant. Religion....well, thats a different story, however, when is the last time you were aware that religeon in a broad sense wasnt included in politics?

Mikey,

As someone stated a while back, these FORUMS are Kim's sandbox, and she would appreciate it if everyone would play nice. If someone doesn't, she'll take care of it. As long as Kim, who invests her money and TIME on this site is not offended, I don't know why you are.

I appreciate people labeling their OT posts "OT", and if these bother you, why not skip over them without a second thought? I find MANY, by not ALL the OT posts entertaining, and many liven up an otherwise "dead" board!

... Bob,
who is going to quickly don his asbestos shorts... flame away, if you'd like!

I'm not sure where you read that I am offended by OT posts, maybe read my post again carefully, I don't see it in there myself. As a matter of fact, I stated that most of them (farm related, etc) are great. I did say however that some areas like politics and religion are in my opinion a bit out of bounds and unfortunately always get nasty with name calling, etc.

Sometimes, a CIVIL discussion of politics or religion is not a bad thing! I'll bet to discuss any opposing party or religion didn't go over well under Saddam!

I don't recall EVER starting a political or religious thread on any of these FORUMS, and I very seldon ever respond to one, but I do enjoy reading other peoples' viewpoints, even if they are the direct opposite of my own. I am very thankfull people in our country have the freedom to make these choices AND discuss them publically!

Besides, if ALL posts were 100% ON TOPIC, and there was nothing else posted, many of the FORUMS would hardly move along at all!

Thanks for the MATURE comments!

I think you need to re-read my post!

I stated I ENJOY reading the points of view of others, and am thankful for the freedom we have to post our individual views! Those are hardly fight'in words!

On this Independance Day, why not practice a little TOLERANCE of others, and be thankfull for our FREEDOM!

also from the off topic section

""Posted by Kim on March 15, 2004 at 11:40:31 from (66.235.27.111):

Due to popular demand, we've created a new "off-topic" area for each of the larger forums ...

Instead of having one off topic forum for all of YT, I thought it would be better to have smaller OT areas so forums that have developed into a virtual community can "OT" with people they know.

This DOES NOT mean off-topic posts are no longer permitted in the regular forum. But tractor conversations should dominate there, and this area allows free-for-all no hassle OT discussions.

As always - keep it friendly and keep it clean. Suggestions and improvment ideas are welcome any time.

Enjoy,
Kim""""

You must be pretty sensetive if you consider my first as a complaint. I was just stating a fact. And if by the two posts on this page as "the ones you've commented in" then I beg to differ with that also. The trailer topic is very on topic as I see it. Trailers play a large role in my tractoring, as with lots of others. And, I think I have a pretty good handle on when I should and should not post to a topic. I don't post much because it's quite apparent that others here have something more intelligent to say than I about a certain subject. My experience has been 20 years of auto repair so I sit back and read the tractor expert's discussions. And, yes, I am strange. You?

Loren, 2 cups 90 wt gear oil, 2 tbsp turtle wax, (blue Coral optional), 1/2 cup Go-Jo industrial hand cleaner (lemon scented), 3 tsp turpentine. Mix ingredients with paint stir stick, apply generously to face with putty knife. Let set overnight. You'll be surprised at the results..... ..straight from Aunt Hilda's secret recipe book.

Mike,

I pretty much agree with you. The OT posts are fine with me but it would be nice to have them in another forum. Lots of times I go back to an older post to see whats being posted and its hard to find due to a lot of followups. Don't mean to sound critical of anyone (not intended); I enjoy getting others thoughts about all kind of issues. I just think it might be better served in an OT forum.

Tommy

Right at the top of the page where it says expand, reply, etc. there is an area that says off-topic. Not too noticeable but it is there. I think there are 4 choices in brackets. Just click on that and he get the OT posts in that forum.
