I have been trying to find a low houred JD 820 for 2 years. It needs to have 2500 hours or less. Needs to be a black dash. Those hours must be verifiable and also all past ownership. My problem has been when I ask for verification everyone comes up with some kind of excuse. These tractors are less than 46 years old---not something that is over 100 and everyone knowing anything is dead. My question to you guys is this. Am I just dreaming that such a tractor is even available. Let me know what you think----I'll just keep the money in the bank drawing what little interest I can get.

I would not put much faith in an hour meter other than to keep track of when to change the oil. One of the best condition tractors I bought was a model 50 from the original owner and he had installed an electric hour meter he also had some records of when it was overhauled. This tractor had at least 11,000 hours for he knew it had went around once. Good maintance and fixing things right when needed, not just patching is very important. If you want to have good tractor and know what you got buy one with great sheetmetal then tear it apart and rebuild it right that way you know it's good.

It is VERY hard to find documented original tractors like that. Only 46 years? Can you remember every event or problem you've had in the last 10 years, let alone 46 if you're that old? Maybe the speed-hour meter quit due to a broken cable back in '53 and the farmer did another 50 hours of planting before getting it fixed, and he may not remember that. Not to mention that mechanical speed-hour meters are only accurate at RATED engine speed. If the guy putted around at half-speed, it will have twice as many hours as are shown. And why only 2500 hours? I've seen tractors with 8000 well-maintained hours that I would write a check for before ones with 4000 hours. Tractors don't have titles, so there is no definitive way to document past ownership in most cases. There aren't too many original-owner 2-bangers out there. Why? Because anyone that went out and bought a brand-new tractor then was pretty likely to continue to buy new and trade off the old through the years - trade the original "A" in on a new 620, the 620 in on a new 4010, the 4010 in on a new 4020, etc. My advice would be to find a tractor, do a thorough checkover of it to make sure it's in the the condition you desire, and take any "history" with a grain of salt.

yep me too.

I have found a $20 oil analysis or a quick dyno check are far more reliable than when the kids are giving oral history rundowns of Uncle Percy's tractor at an estate sale.

One of my personal best buys was 9500 hours showing, one of my worst was with 4100 showing.

Well, it sure seems to me that after a "recount" went ahead anyway in a certain 3 un-named Florida counties, it wasn't "selected" at all. Personally, I'm still laughing that after those "chad" booths were replaced in those same 3 un-named counties by liguid plasma "fool proofs", the fools still got it wrong - and if you don't believe me, just ask Janet Reno, whom is unemployed thanks to those new "fool proofs". Ever hear the off the cuff recorded remark by Monica's Bill the day after that happened? Went something like "If our people can't get it right in our own Primary's, how the h... can we expect them to get it right during the General?".
