Way off subject as I am not even servicing the truck used for hauling tractor but it has towed a tractor before so here goes.

The tranny calls for Dexron II. I changed filter and drained TQ. I had purchased additional fluid to suppliment what I had on the shelf. I could not find Dexron II - but found Dexron III which said on the back suitable for Dexron II and Dexron IIE so this is what I bought.

Once home, I recogized that the oil I had on the shelf says Dexron IIE. No where on the container does it say ok or not ok for just plain Dexron II. Is IIE ok to use??

ps. Every once in a while the old tranny (an 83 AOD FORD)is a little slow locking into 3rd. I usually just back off it locks in and may not do it again for many trips. It has never acted up in 1st, 2nd, or OD. When I removed the pan all was very clean. Thoughts appreciated.

That vintage of FIOD, AOD, and AODE required Mercon (XT-2-QDX). Do not mix Mercon with Mercon V as the Mercon V has about 30% synthetic and the Lubrizol additive package will cause deterioration of the friction material adhesives and some deterioration of the Viton seals.

That vintage also had a governor mounted on the OutPut Shaft. This sintered governor body was driven by the output shaft via a 1/4" ball sitting in a pocket in the OPS. The point contact eventually wears into the sintered metal governor body and the governor body clocks or rotates out of allignment with the oil feed holes in the OPS. This causes slow and sluggish shift response.

This transmission also used several shift accumulators which can get sticky and leaky and also cause slow shift response. Not much you can do here short of a complete rebuild.

This transmission used a mechanical throttle linkage to set shift pressure rather than a vacuum module. The connection or lever to control this shift pressure is located at the drivers side of the transmission and it rotates a shaft which runs through the center of the manual shift lever. Make sure that this smaller lever and shaft are free to rotate easily. There must not be any binding from dirt debris, bent shafts or binding throttle cables or rods. It must move effortlessly. You can check this while parked and engine off.

Hope this helps.

Like Ron said the fluid will be fine , usally the vacum system determines the shifting on automatic trans.

Minus all the history... if you are asking if II-E can be used in a vehicle where II is specified the answer is yes. The "E" simply indicates it meets the later specification for "E"lectronic transmissions.

No apology necessary. I just read it when I got up this AM and found it a little confusing... should have finished my cup of coffee first!
