I'm looking at getting another tractor, after using my present tractor (Farmall H), I've decided on a few features I need/want. Economical diesel engine, live PTO, live hydrualics, power steering, 3pt hitch, wide front, and somwhere between 45 and 60hp. I will be using it mainly for haying (mowing, raking, square baling), but will possibly use it for 4 row equip. Please, NO color wars. I know some about IH and Deere, enough to know Deere is too expensive. Was wondering about those two and AC and Oliver. Thanks for any advice on any tractor models.

Right here man!! In my opinion the very very best valu you can find right now is a Farmall 400.
As in Value I mean bang for the buck.
There is not a huge demand for them right now so you can get a 300 or a 400 for less than $3000 in great condition all the way down to less than $1500 is you shop.

400 has 50 hp, live power, Live hydralics, TA and Fast hitch. I use a conversion for my 3pt stuff. Not as good for matching implements for 3pt but can do.

Plus if you can work on a H you can work on a 400.

This is my 1st year using the 400 as my main tractor and I think it is a great haying tractor.
Just the right amount of power for every thing I do.
656 would also be a great choice just costs alot more.

Well I am going ot have to agree with the fella who said to look at the fords. I love Oliver's and we use modern Deeres but for he money a mid sized ford is really hard to beat. I would say they are probably the most economical on fuel of any of them. Parts can be gotten most anywhere, they are usually a smaller sized tractor than the others with the same HP and fairly reliable.

We just bought a 64? Ford 4000 that is a one owner and the Selec-o-speed was rebuilt a few years ago. Was going to trade on it or sell it but the dang thing is real handy for hay work and doing little things around here.

You could step up to a IH '56 series. Such as a 656, 756, 856... Or skip up to the '66 series. Heck, just move up to the Farmall 300, 350 or 400, 450 is a night and day difference from the old H.. just get one with power steering, wide front, and add a saginaw 3 pt hitch and you're set.

Im going to cast a vote for a Massey 135 or 165. They have all that you want, the 135 maybe a bit under powered with a baler on hills.

I like Olivers, but new parts are not as available and they didn't sell many of the newer ones so used parts are also harder to find. I am not a particular AC fan, but the D17 was a good tractor and they sold a lot of them. Consequently parts are readily available, particularly used ones. I really like the Ford 5000 and 4000 series including the derivaties such as the 4500 and 5500. Just don't get the Select-O-Speed, more potential problems than it is worth.

Don't buy an Oliver 500 or 600. Good tractors but almost impossible to get parts for.

That is perhaps because you are not looking in a David Brown parts book.

Okay, I will be the odd man out, but I think a Ford 5000 will fit your needs. Been using one for these purposes since it was bought new in 67. Good, dependable and parts are easy to obtain.

Having run 6 cylinder Olivers as my main tractors (ie, at PTO speed for long periods of time), I was surprised at how irritating the 4 cylinder IH's were (had a 674 and 574). Don't know if the 6 cylinder IH tractors are as smooth as the Olivers, but might be worth looking at. AC D-17 would also fill the bill. I wouldn't worry about parts availability- I haven't bought a part locally for years, as all the dealers except JD are gone in my area- get a parts book, and order over the phone for UPS shipment. The advice on the foreign built tractors is also worth heeding.

The only tractor I know of with all those features is an Oliver 1550, 1600, or 1650.

All parts are easily available. If you have an AGCO dealer, great. If not, Valu - Bilt and T.H.E. company sell them over the 'Net. Many AGCO dealers sell and ship parts via phone orders all over the country. Most primary and secondary electric system parts are available at NAPA.

Be sure to get one with the Hydraul-Shift. That gives you 18F and 6R speeds.

A little AC D14 or D15 would fill the bill very nicely. They have the options you want and the parts are readily availible. The newer versions that came with a three point are much better tractors then the older ones that have been converted from the snap coupler to three point.

Only problem with Oliver is the parts are pretty hard to find - at least in my area.

Check under the hood(sheet metal in this case).
Some models may say Massey, White, IH, etc on the sheet metal but be made over seas by a different company. This can be good or bad. A friend had 45 hp International, 1980 something model, When he overhauled it that model had a couple of different motors and his happened to be a discontinued model made in India. They sent him four cam shafts, all the wrong size , before putting the old one back in. He was finally told That motor did not work out well, IH stopped useing it and the company stopped makeing it 10 years ago and all the spare parts have been used up. He also had a Ford about the same age and broke the exhaust manifold. He found out that same tractor had two different manifolds. Lucked out that time ,the one he had was available the other one hard to get and almost three times as costly.

Since you have a IH now and are familar with it I would think that a newer improved version of an IH would be your first choice.
