I've used PB Blaster and Kroil. Both are good, neither are remarkable.

Might I suggest vinegar instead? Learned that trick years ago, and been quite pleased with how well it frees up rusted piston rings from the bore.

PB Blaster is avaialble at our local Wal Marts. Try there. Have used both PB and Kroil with equal success. You may need more PB to do the job but kroil is about 4 times as much, at least in the midwest. Also available at our Farm and Fleet and Fleet Farm stores. That's my 2 cents and for what its worth, keep the change.

Everybody has their favorite and opinions seem to vary but we've tried everything we could get out hands on off the shelf or that we could convince our various venders to give us samples of and PB Blaster has always come out on top. You should be able to get it at NAPA, around here they always carry it. Everybody has a story about what turned them onto their favorite penetrant, here's what we ran into. We had a 8" shaft rusted in a gear years ago that we had put heat and 75 tons on and it didn't move. We set it off to the side for a couple days while doing some other things and kept it soaked in Blaster. Dad walked by it one day and just playing around hit the end if the shaft with a 4lb shop hammer and the shaft moved. From there all it took was a few minutes and it was apart. We have found other producst that seem to work good also but they always have something that make them unatractive to use, be it smell, a spray pattern that you can't "aim" at a joint, or that has such force it splashes back at you, etc etc. All in all Blaster is the best all around we have found . Just my .02

Dick,

Make sure your valves aren't stuck before trying to winch the engine over. Pull the head -- you gotta do that eventually. I have heard of all sorts of nasty things getting into the cylinders with open valves.

Any idea why the engine was stuck?

Have used both. Kroil is better, much better.

Never had any good luck with PB Blaster, did not seem to work at all, had good luck with Kroil, though.

Sometimes you can find it at Menard's. I haven't used it on a stuck engine, but I've had very good luck with it on stuck/rusted bolts.

If anyone ever claims that the "whatever" brand oaf penetrating oil is any better than others, I think they're fooling themselves. Personally, I think that penetrating oils are pretty much the same and if they loosen something up by themselves then whatever was tight or stuck wasn't very tight or stuck. They help out but by themselves I'd say they have limited effect, although any type of liquid oil (if it is thin enough) is going to help somewhat. The two things I think that are the real solutions are physical force (gentle sometimes needed) and heat. Without those, oils are just a cosmetic thing that make us feel better. Just my two cents but that might be overpriced.

Freed up a rust stuck MD a few years back with the Kroil, after soaking for 5 months with PB Blaster.Kroil took about two weeks, althoughtb Im sure the Pb had something to do with it.I still keep a can of PB around for spaying the hinges on my barn door.To me its no better than WD40.For serious penetrating I have always had good luck with Kroil.

Dick, it's P.B. Blaster and I get it at a local auto parts place. I've had very good luck with it, but as in most things, it takes a little patience. I had a stuck engine which had been sitting for 20 years. Sprayed generous amounts of P.B. Blaster in through the spark plug holes and left it for about a week or two. Tried hand cranking but it wouldn't budge. Sprayed some more in and let it set another 2 weeks. This time she turned over but it was still pretty hard cranking. Sprayed some more in and next week she started turning over a whole lot better. HTH, Glenn

Most auto parts stores, especially NAPA. By far the best product I've ever used.

I like to use Marvel Mystery oil mixed with kerosene... If I need to apply heat, I use it straight, no kerosene..heat doesent seem to hurt Marvel Mystery oil...At least not to extreme temps...! IMHO..

Me too Ron , I just load the cylinders up pretty good with the Marvel Mystery Oil ,replace plugs and let it soak in a few days.

You can get it just about anywhere. Does it work? Not any better than any other penetrating oil, and it costs more. In my situation, it failed miserably.

I get mine at NAPA. It works. A friend of mine had a seriously stuck Farmal F engine from water entering the vertical exhaust. He put PB in all four cylinders, worked them a little up and a little down and after a while (two days) they broke free.

Just remember, it didn't take only a few days to get it stuck, so it may take that long to get it unstuck.

I've had good luck with Mystery oil in the cylinder with some air pressure behind it. Found that my compression gage had a flexable hose with a quick disconect at the gage that fit the Hansen air hose quick connect. Screw into the cylinder and plug in the air. The process increased the compression in several of my tractors.
