Need help with a IHC 460 diesel that smokes white most of the time. I have checked the injectors by cracking them and listening for the engine to miss and they all seem to be working. Drained the fuel filters and cleaned out the sediment bowl. Installed a new water temp gauge and it never gets very hot. Under 200 degrees. It seems to have gotten worse the last year or so. Its worse at idle than at top end but it still puts out whitish smoke. Any ideas? Thanks Gary

Just answered a post on this last week. Info is verifiable on this site.

White cold engine
Blue crankcase oil
Black rich mixture (unburned diesel)

I have 2 Fords with identical instrument panels.

The first one acquired ran on the left of midrange with a 160 thermostat. The second one ran at the edge of HOT. I removed the thermostat (on #2) and took it in the house and put it on the stove with a candy thermometer and it started opening at 160 like the marking on it said it should. I still didn't trust it. Bought another thermostat. Temp gauge read as before. Erroneous reading gauge!!!

Conclusion: Just because your instruments are telling you that the engine is below 200 you may be WAY below 200. Pull your thermostat out and check it and check the temp. If it says and is 160 you may want to go to a 180.

Used to run a rock bucket (dump truck 800 cid 400 hp Cummins 6 cyl turbo). On cold mornings white smoke came out of the stack until I got the engine warm (down the highway 10 miles or so). Then it was gone. Never had a problem in the summer. Tell you anything?

Mark

white smoke is a sign of unburned diesel... several things cause it.... poor compression is top of the list... as the engine warms up, compression increases...tolerances decrease. so smoke kinda goes away....a worn injection pump an cause smoke...decreased injection pressures....worn injectors that don't atomize fuel properly can cause white smoke....if the exhaust burns your eyes, its unburned fuel...

White smoke from a diesel that has run a few minutes and should be warmed up is caused by the engine NOT being warm enough. Most of the time, it's a missing/defective thermostat.

I will look into the missing/defective thermostat. What temp thermostat should it have?

Check the operator's manual or ask your dealer.
