I have a 5600 Ford when I turn the key I get a clicking noise from the solenoid then I hear the starter spinning. Is this an indication of a bad solenoid or possibly something else?

The starter drive is shot. Some people call them the "Bendix" after the company that invented them.

Any place that rebuilds starters can fix it.

Jim,

If you can hear the starter spinning like crazy and nothing is happening as far as cranking goes, chances are you have a bad starter drive.

Everything else is working or the starter wouldn't be spinning.

Or batt voltage low, weak battery or dirty cables/connections. Something in the ckt is getting the volts that the solenoid is trying to send to the starter. At a couple hundred amps starting current, doesn't take much crud or the battery could be too weak (internal resistance high).

Either way you got your answers.

The solenoid engages the starter drive momentarily before the starter motor in energized so the drive is not alrady spinning when it hits the ring gear.Sounds like your drive isn't being engaged.Usually its the switch plate in the solenoid switch that gets arced and doesn't make good contact. On some solenoids it is possible to remove the plastic end cap and reverse the swith plate. It is most likely the solenoid switch but could also be a problem with the drive gear or the ring gear teeth.Depending upon how many cylinders an engine has, the engine always stops in one of two places on a 4 cylinder and one of three places on a 6 cylinder So the ring gear takes a bit of a beating in those areas after time.
