I am looking for a mower cond and baler and I live in the upper pennisula of Michigan. I have not been able to find any closer than 250-300 miles away for sale in my price range. How far should they be towed? Or should I load them on a tandem trailer? My trailer not a flat and is only 6 feet wide, What do you do about the tongue of the baler or mower if put on sideways or sides hanging off if loaded with the other way?? Any equipment in north eastern Wisconsin for sale??

You can tow as far as you want if you go slow and keep the wheels greased. I towed a 12 ft drop spreader with bushings for 75 miles. I did not go over 20 miles/hr and stopped to grease every 15 miles. Just takes a lot of time. Remember you are taking a chance if you go on the interstate, that is it would be an immediate ticket if you are caught. If I had only a short distance I might take the chance. It just depends on the location (amount of traffic)and if you are feeling particularly lucky. Make sure the tires are ok. Myself, I would probably trailer it, unless I had plenty of time and wanted to see the country side. Also avoid real hot days. I would not tow above 85 degrees F and that may be pushing it, for long distances.

I agree get a trailer even just pulling one with a tractor at lo speeds ccan be a challange. but for a condisoner you really need a semi it will handle it better. and as for permits call D.O.T fines can get steep and cost you a lot of downtime.

I just towed a parts baler home about 15 miles that had a bad bearing in the wheel. It did not have a tongue that swung so the baler hung about four foot out to the side. I made it home without hitting any mail boxes or bicyclist or cars. I had my son with me to remind to stay over. I pulled over to let the traffic go by me several times. I was often times riding the center line with my flashers on doing about 30 mph. It was not fun when the right wheel got over in the gravel hitting chuckholes along the road. If I was you and did not have a flat bed trailer, I would go rent a car haluler trailer form Ryder or Hertz, get a piece of channel and lay across the trailer to hold the tires and load with tongue forwarrd on top of the existing tongue. THis will set your baler on ther at a little bit of an angle. However this will allow you to get home in a reasonable amount of time and most importantly, SAFELY!

Towing over 30 miles is a bad idea! The wheels have bushings instead of bearings usually. The width is a problem as are the tires (both already addressed), which are built for slow off-road use only. Time is a factor also, figure out the towing time because you will not be allowed on interstates as the minimum speed is usually 45MPH. This means an overnight stop if towing, which will go far in paying for having it hauled. You may figure 50MPH if hauling, as an average speed overall. At 50MPH that is 6 HRs, at 30MPH that is 10 HRs-ie: overnight stop or towing in darkness, rush hour, etc. Remember, you cannot bypass all those small towns since you can't use interstates! No. 1 make sure the tires are sound and the bearings are greased. No. 2 get the biggest pin that will fit. No. 3 using chains and a come-along, hook the come-along just back of the hitch pin and to the right side of the implement. That should take the slop out of the tongue and keep what you are pulling, running straight.

I towed a round baled 95 miles home, no problem. I'd have to think long & hard about going too much farther than that, just for the wear & tear & time....

Also, with offset hitches, your implements tend to wobble more, endanger mailboxes more, not want to travel over 30 mph....

For that distance, trailering would be better.

When you drive around, does anyone have cattle & horses around you? That would seem to be good livestock area, can't imagine nothing local available...

With about 400 acres done 3 times a year and our baler being close to 10 years old how many miles do you think she has on her? I would repack the bearings if you pull it and keep the speed down. It used to be that with a SMV sign you had to be 25 or under or were speeding. Not too enforced and may be up to 30 or 35 now. Trailering would be the best if you can get it on there and off at home. Tongues are removable but it may take some work. Good luck

I towed a IH 55T baler home several years ago. I tried to take backroads home - 30+ miles. I wiped out several mailboxes - better trailer it. Irv

I suggest you rent a proper trailer or hire someone who has the right equipment.

The tongue on most moco's are removable with big enough wrenches. Just make sure it is parked where you want it before you take it off.

I don't think the miles would be anything to worry about its just the speed in witch you are going. Some impliments like to sway around when they are going down the road.

In Michigan over 96 inches is a wide load which they say requires an oversize load permit, and identification. You can put channel across the rails of your trailer to set the tires on and chain down If you have a long enough trailer and want to haul more than one at a time you can put the tongue below the other one, this will be easy with the wheels mounted higher. I'm assuming you have sides made from angle iron, like the utility trailers that are available everywhere, and have sufficient capacity to haul the equipment. Be sure to use proper chains and chain binders because they also have laws about unsecure loads. DOT says the weakest link in the binding system should be capable of restraining half the weight of the load, but I like haveing each chain being capable of holding the load.

Concerning your question about how far you can tow one, how many miles will you tow it across the field until you are done baling. And you will be hanpered by interstate highways. With a slow moving vehicle I think the speed limit is around 30 or 35 above that you can get a ticket for speeding. If coming from the lower peninsula it would be fun trying to get over the Macinac Bridge :-)

I would think your trailer would work.
