Pardon the OT, but there is a nasty beagle out there. If you use Norton, like I do, you must have the July 19th update to cover it. I did not, since it came in the 18th. Its tried 4 more times this morning from somebody named "Kgteinc" All is well now. I maintain a complete backup at all times.

Automatic Update.

My Norton 2003 checks for updates any time I go online, and updates pretty nearly every day, and sometimes twice or three times.

I haven't been hit with a virus (knock on wood...) in 3 or 4 years.

My 2003 Norton internet security is usually as lonely as the maytag man,as my isp provides free Postini Antivirus. For the last few days this new virus has been getting past Postini, while Norton has been grabbing and deleting it. The virus is comming to me disguised as an undiliverable e mail report from my isp. Glad I updated Norton in the last few days.

Coloken when I get unkown and suspicious e-mail or some kind of spam , in out-look express I usually go to the message taskbar and then block sender to get rid of them.

That's kind've how Cisco Systems new security software works, allows or denys by policies. You manually say I don't know who you are, and delete, it automatically says I don't know who you are or why you're trying to do what you're trying to do, so sends an event that it killed an unauthorized attempt at an action. Don't ask me much more on it, I'm just a phone guy during the week and a weekend farmer that somehow ended up in a Cisco Security class with a bunch of IT/MIS guys, and my head's about to explode. Thanks for lettin me vent. McAfee, Norton, and the likes are reactive software and are effective with updates. I did learn that on the average, 2000+ viruses and trojans are released per year - that's a lot. Is Cisco's new security software available for John Q. Public's PC? I was affraid to ask, I didn't want to not fit in with those guys more than I already didn't. Ask me about phones all day long, but ask me about setting up policies and permissions on 300,000 station LANs/WANs again, and my head is really going to explode. How did I end up in that class? Point me to my tractor.

Oh, and by the way, I learned that Norton is really Symantic now. I even learned Norton's first name although I don't recall it, and it aint Ralph's friend Ed either. Jeez, I thought it was too. I'm going to go stick my head in the freezer now. Good night.

I just resubscribed to Norton 2004 (on my older computer). I think the older version was Norton 2001 and renewals on that one were no longer available. Ever since the 2004 was intstalled, my computer has slowed down on everything. Start up, internet connections, email in and out, everything is super slow now. Guess maybe the newer version on an older machine is causing the problems I don't know. Anyways, thought I'd mention it even though it has nothing to do with your post information.

The only virus checker I've ever had work is also the Norton anti-virus and firewall. The spy-ware blocker " add alert" and others cleans a pile of system bogging and snoop software trash from the system. Some sites you sign onto down load programs that track your info.

Well I have a hunch that the so called "free" screen savers are intended to do just that. Otherwise how can it be free, and it requires a download.

my 2c.

Go to internet options and clear out your site visited files and cookies. The longer it takes for the hour glass to disappear, the more data you have stored. Especially if you have pictures, you can have a ton of data that will slow your responses down.

Besides, you may not want your wife to know where you've been surfing, if you share the machine; then again you may. (May be shopping for a Christmas gift for her..... like a new tractor, or a shotgun for your infant son. Grin).
