I just bought a used ford 1220. It just seems like the tractor should have more power than it does. My dad has 2 kubotas with similar HP engines and they seem more powerfull. I replaced the fuel(used off road deisel), fuel filter, air filter, hydrolic filter, oil and oil filter. I must admit it seems to be running better than it did before i did this stuff. But with the tractor in high range (hydrostatic tranny) and no PTO running it really bogs down going up a slight grade. To the point I have to back off the pedal or it might stall out.

There is some sort of tube running from the top of the engine along side of the engine, poiting to the ground. It lookd like a breather or a vent. Yesterday when the tractor was running I noticed smoke coming out of this tube. Today after running it a bit more I can see some oil dripping out of this tube. I dont know anything about diesel engines, but this dosnt seem like it should be doing this.

Th tractor starts right up. When its sitting, or moving on the flat it revs right up to the 540 mark on the tach without a problem. It seems to be running smooth to me. But I dont have much to compare it too. It dosnt seem to make that "knocking" noise as much as my dads Kubotas do. Is there a chance I might be down a cylinder? Is there a way to check that all 3 are working ?

Thank You for your time. I could sure use some advice here !!

Hi kirk,

Sounds like you could have a suction air leak in your fuel system. You can have a suction air leak but not leak any fuel.

Try to run a clear return line and look for bubbles. Bubbles then you have a leak.

Craig has some good advise as to problems with a diesel engine & how to tell.

I think you only have a 2 cyl, 3 at most, so you would 'know' if you were totally missing a cylinder!!!! :)

With so little hp, just a little weight can make quite a difference going up a hill. Very hard to compare the Kubota to the Ford as you are doing - any wheel weights, loader, implements, wheel size, gearing issues that are different? Perhaps your Ford goes just a little bit faster, this will show up a lot tho on torque.

Hydro tranny. They take 25% of your power in heating the oil right there. Can only compare to other hydro tractors. A gear tractor will have 25% more torque for the same hp, in general.

A 1220 is only 13 PTO horse power

I tend to agree on this point---what you have is a glorified lawn mower, so you shouldn't expect to to perform like a gas engine either.

I've had a 1500 Ford and now have a 1720. There was no comparison between the two--kind of like a lawn mower and a tractor/apples and oranges thing.

Best wishes for getting it tuned properly to perfection.

You mention that it is a hydro. Are the Kubotas that you are comparing to also hydros? The hydrostatic transmission is very good at sucking a lot of power. Great for a lot of different jobs, but lousy on power. Some blow-by as they call it out that pipe you refer to is normal. Oil dripping off of it is a bit excessive, but I'm not sure that I'd go to the extreme of a engine teardown just yet. Find out how much PTO power it should have, then find someone with a good PTO dyno and have the thing tested. I'm guessing that it's got the power it's supposed to have, but that hydro tranny is just using a lot of it, especially at faster speeds.

You mentioned this tractor doesn't have the characteristic "deisel knock" you are used to hearing on your Kubotas. It is possible the injector pump is slightly out of time and worth looking into. IF you can drive the tractor in high gear up a fair grade without excessive blue smoke the engine is PROBABLY OK. IF it's black smoke better look into timing/nozzles/injector pump..... in that order.

bogging a little on an incline is normal in high range on small tractors.

Smoke/oil out the crankcase vent means the rings are shot. A compression test will confirm.

Possibly (probably?) but not necessarily. May be glazed bores through running too lightly loaded continuously. This is where at least a little of the previous running history is needed before jumping to conclusions.

Good point, but a compression test will show the same results... and the engine still has to come apart... and it's still the same job in the shop, machine/replace the cylinders, replace the rings, etc.

I agree engine MAY have to come apart, but it MAY only be at the stage where it just needs some good hard to recover it. Expense, expense - why not try the low cost options first! Not much to lose and may be a simple fix.

Exactly my point... a compression test is always the first step to make that determination.

You asked about breather tube ,some smoke and a little oil is ok. How ever when idling does it make a bop bop noise if so time for an overhaul. Also could the injectors be in need of cleaning or replacement? To check if you are down a cylinder start set at fast idle and crack the fuel at the injector one at a time, to see if engine bogs down a bit just like pulling a plug wire off a gasser. Just do a little tinkering and you could find problem I hope GOOD LUCK..

For the price of a diesel compression tester you can probably take it to the local New Holland dealer for expert inspection. That 1220 is not that old, in a 1/2 hour the mechanic can do compression, fuel and air check - and he will know what it should sound/run like. I have had a few of these little buggers, but not hydro. My 12-20hp diesel tractors labor up a gradual hill in high gear, and a steep high requires lower gear.
