I have a 1976 Ford 550 Backhoe Loader. It has a Ford 201 3 cylinder Diesel motor. Was working fine 2 days ago. Then it just died. Battery OK. Starter OK. When the starter engages, I just get a "THUD". sounds like it's seized. Would anyone know how to confirm a seized engine without completely removing the motor from the frame? Thanks

OK, thanks Doug! I'll try to turn the shaft for the hydraulic pump that is right behind the front grille

I bought my 555 that was sitting for a 3 year period without being run. When I looked at it, I decided to check to see if it was seized. I removed the front grill plate, and grabbed a hold of the pump shaft and turned the motor over with not to much trouble. You might want to see if the pump maybe causing your grief, it seems strange that when you parked it,the motor was ok, but now won't turn. Just my 2 cents worth, Good luck.

Take a pipe wrench or big wrench and put on the front of the engine and try to turn it, remembering a diesel will have over 300# of compression, that is normally how I check 'em out to see if they are locked up. Kinda crude sounding, but, hey it works.
