I got some brake linings made the other day and I measured my drum as being 12 inches when in fact it was more like 11.5 inches so the pads to don't want to set on my old shoes very well. I have tried bending one so far and it has broken across the holes of course, so I was wondering if anyone knew how I could get them to form a bit closer? Do I have to heat the rascals? I got a few of them and now I am stuck, any ideas? Thanks in advance.

I really am just guessing that the resin which holds he friction material together is a resin which will respond to heat. Try heating in an oven at various increasing temperatures until it becomes pliable then clamp over the shoe to develop the form.

Depending on what kind of lining you have as to what you can do. We've been lining bands for cranes for years and we've found that with the hard "block" lining there is no way to change it and make it smaller because thus kind of material is , for want of a better word, molded to shape. If it is a softer type solid lining or a woven lining it can usually be rolled to shape in a slip roller. Just my .02

Have you talked to the place that made them for you ? See what they say. You may end up getting another set,you allready need one more new one.

Where did you get linings made ? I didn't know this was an option. Is this for something very old and rare?

They are not for anything particularly rare or old but I thought I would save some money by having them made. It cost 60.00 a set where these would run around 42.00, but I have to drill the holes in them. Here is the info I got from the MM website.

Brake Supply Co. Inc.

Brake & Clutch lining and friction supplies. You can send them in or they will send you the material and you can line them yourself. Nice people.

Off the wall but would work.

Cut them into pieces and secure (rivets, glue) take to brake shop and have ground down.

Trying to take 1/4 off the corners of an existing pad is about the thickness of the pad. But if you cut them into 2 or 3 pcs per shoe, there would be much less material to arc and pads would last longer. No reason why pad has to be one piece. Some clutch discs are in multiple pieces.

Ryan,

They should be arced to the correct "roundness".

Most reputable brake shops have the abrasive drum to grind them to the proper shape.

If I understood correctly you got new linings made for your existing brake bands. I don't know about the ones you are using, but many of them bend easier if soaked in water for a while.

Ryan: Do I understand you correctly, the shoes are big? In the old days the shoes where arched to fit, that is the linings where ground, to make up for turning the drums. Also I believe the shoes should be slightly small so as to create smoother brake action. The shoe should bent to fit with more brake peddle pressure.
