Discharging generator

Hi,

I have a 1948 Farmall H with 6v pos. ground and magneto. When I turn the light switch to H,D or B I get full discharge with the tractor running. If I hook up a jumper wire to the F terminal on the regulator and to a ground I get +/- 15 amp charge.

I have tried polarizing the regulator numerous times with no change. I have also hooked a ground directly to switch and this makes it worse.

Does anyone have any thoughts on this and how I can fix it?

Thank you.

If you ground the field and it charges then the problem is most likely the regulator. There is nothing wrong with the generator. It could also be a ground problem. Those old Ms and Hs were notorious for having grounding problems. It could simply be the ground(connection) between the front of the light switch box and the back part. That is usually where the problem is.Take a file anf clean the matching parts up till they are shiny and clean. Some people used to put a strip of copper between the two parts. Also clean the regulator mounting real good too.

After recieving your reply I cleaned up the grounds and found that the ammeter would charge if I disconnected the ground to the switch. As soon as I connected this ground wire up again it showed full discharge again.

Does mean that my regulator is bad?

Thank you again.

Scotty

If the regulator wasn't polarized, it killed the generator.

If the regulator won't polarize, it's dead.

You might be replacing both.

Scotty,

Sounds like either your regulator isn't properly grounded or it is kaput.

Just guessing from across the field,

Allan
