Slow Cranking Tractor - Help

I rebuilt the gas engine last year in my Massey Harris 555. It had two new 6v batteries in series to make 12v two yrs ago. I do have a drain which constantly drains the batteries. (I will fix the drain!!) I need to replace the batteries. The engine has a massey service kit with dome pistons. The high compression makes it crank hard. Now that my batteries have been stained. What should I replace them with; one 12v battery? two 6v batteries in series or two 12v in parallel. Does amperage double when the batteries are hooked in series? parallel?

What is the voltage measured from the starter's cast body and the main lug into the starter that is energized only when cranking?

I have an OTR truck place nearby and buy the next size up from 27 (31 I think) but it has threaded studs that you can put a nut on and crank down on the lugs. Don't get crudded up like the standard lead terminal does.

Amperage is 950 cca and one is plenty to do my Ford 3000D in the winter (about 40 hp). I use 2 on a JD 4010D (80 hp)making 24v and the engine screams....starts in 1 to 2 seconds. Wire size is 2/0 and short as possible...tight and shiny. Batteries are $56 ea. Outstanding buy.

Scott,
The current (Amperage) capacity will double and the voltage will remain the same when you connect 2 identical batteries in parallel i.e. positive-to-positive and negative-to-negative. The voltage will double when you connect two batteries in series i.e. negative to positive.
I would recommend using one 12 Volt battery if you have enough physical space for one that meets your cold cranking current requirements.
A single battery tends to have a much longer life cycle than a parallel circuit.
Good luck

Cold cranking amps - more is better! :) Bigger wires, and solid tight connections at all ends are important. I'll bet you have issues with dirty connectors & small cables.....

In series doubles the volts, takes on the amps of the _weakest_ battery.

In parallel doubles the amps - well, adds together the amps.

I'd look for one 12v that has more CCA's than you have now; if there isn't anything that fits, then go with 2. More connections, more fuss, more places for a bad connection, but what can you do. Guess I'd lean towards 2 12v in parallel, but not sure why....

Two 12V batteries in parallel will give you double the amps. Be sure to use real battery cables, like 1/0 cable with soldered full copper terminals, not auto parts store junk cables. I make my own with parts from http://www.madelectrical.com/ or he will make them for you.

NAPA has a premimum line of high amp batteries. I've had one in a tractor for 9 years and can't kill it.
