Has anybody added 4 wheel drive to a 2 wheel drive 1 ton truck? I have a 98 Dodge with straight front axle that I use to go after tractors with and was just wondering.

Hi George,

I wrecked my Dodge 4x4 one time and I bought a another Dodge to replace it. Since all my running componets was one owner and well taken care of, I decided to swap all my running gear to the new cab and frame.

The biggest snag was Dodge in there wisdom stocked two different cranks for a measly pilot bushing hole. The auto's didn't have the pilot bushing hole so I had to pull the crank and have it drilled. The truck I bought had a 4spd and I thought it would be nice for a change.

The second problem is someone put the wrong size clutch & flywheel in. Another $250 it had a new clutch and flywheel.

Took me about 30days by my self and $1250 total. Thats been 14yrs ago. Worth it? Was at the time and I still have it. Would I do it again? Only to build up a off road truck.

Sure. Sell your truck, & buy one with 4wd.

Hi George,

I did this one time; never again. It is way, way cheaper to buy a 4x4; I had to swap out or modify everthing except the darned pickup bed.

Even the floor of the cab had to be bent & "lifted" to allow that transfer case room to live.

It was quite an experience tho. :>)

I concur!!! I switched out a 2wd pickup to a 4 x 4 by locating and buying a frame that already had the front axle mounted, and had the location for the transfer case... I ended up re-engineering and fabricating nearly everything on the truck, and in the process, used up valuable time that I would rather have spent doing something enjoyable. The truck turned out very well, and I drove it for a number of years... but in looking back, I realize I would have been MUCH better off to sell the 2wd truck and buy the 4x4 of my dreams! Think of all the time I could'a been fishin!!!

As an afterthought, I'll just mention a couple of things to consider (in case you get the bug). First, you'll have to figure out how to ACCURATELY mount the front axle. You may have to locate a specific flexible brake line to mate up to the axle and the fitting on the truck. Then, there's springs and shocks. Next, you'll need to mount a transfer case onto your transmission. You'll have to locate and buy the transfer case, mounting bracket and probably both drive shafts. Hopefully, you won't have to modify the engine mounts (although I did). finally, consider all hoses, wiring, mounts for EVERYTHING, exhaust system, etc, because most things that fit perfectly with the 2wd system in place will probably interfere with everything your'e trying to build. It is a HUGE time and money pit!!! Move your truck on its merry way and buy a good 4 x 4... you'll be WAY ahead of the game!
Regards, DL

I have been looking under the truck and wondering if it could be done. I have a straight front axle already and the main stabiliser looked offset to accomodate a front drive axle center housing. I was hoping it would just be easy exchanged. It is hard to find single cab long wheel base 1 ton that hasn't been commercially used or used up. I was really wanting to put in a 6 speed and transfer case but did not consider having to reshape the cab. Oh well, I have 7 tractors, 6 forklits, 1 backhoe, a few implements to repair right now. So it will give me some time to think about it. Thank you fellows for your input.

I tried the same thing once on a FORD, BIG MISTAKE, your better off switching body parts off the 2 wheel and put on the 4 wheel, alot easier and alot less hasles with trying to go down the road straight, Good Luck,,,Tim
