As a newcomer to the worl of tractors I am making a right jash of trying to correct a problem I obviously do not understan.
Wehn connecting a new battery to the tractor and then turning engine over to start it the neg earth terminal and lead smokes and over heats .

Have connected tractor earth to neg terminal on battery and starter feed lead to positive on battery . any ideas thanks

Iain, I used to sell and work on those old D.B.'s. Does it get hot and smoke as soon as you hook up the battery cables or only when you turn the key to start it? If the latter, you have a very bad starter. If the first, I'm not sure, but I would assume a bad soleniod and possibliby a bad starter as well. Steve

check your starter solenoid and wires that come from it see if you have a short or ground also you should check that terminal end is clean and where is bolts to tractor is clean and has a good connection is starter ok did it work before you changed battery?. I had a 990 good tractor mine was a 61 I have all the manuals if you need any drop me an email rodswinamer@yahoo.ca. regards
