Cheating the Dyno

O.K. so I was at a couple tractor pulls in the last two weeks and I have been noticing some foul play, a lot actually. There are people that are running in the stock farm class with there old Farmall M's and John Deere A's. It is obvious that they are pushing over 100hp and yet when they go to the dyno it tests out at 40 or 44 like it should. How do they cheat the dyno? I even heard one guy laughing about it after the pulls where he has 130 horse in his motor, yet the dyno only found 44hp. How do they do that? Just a curious looker on.
Thanks.

It would seem to me to be a moot point anyway. How much power could a M or any other old tractor for that matter, transter to the ground with 14-16 inch wide bias ply tires. At our pulls there is a walking pace speed limit so it dont seem to serve much more than bragging rights. Of course it could be similar to that fish I caught last weekend.....

Slack off the pto clutch and let her slip a little. The speed limit horn/light on the sled is one of the better ways to weed out the cheats.

I suppose it could be possible you could readjust your timing and fuel mixture then put them back. When I have dynoed some of these tractors the most gains of power were from this. On that 130 hp that could be like a fishing trip story, the one that got away keeps growing everytime the story is told.

Are they diesel? Are they cutting back on the fueling or turbo settings?

MD's aren't real popular pulling tractors and Deere never made a diesel A. I think they're playing with the governors so they don't open the throttle blade in the carb completely. Most pulling clubs allow 10% over OEM RPM so on an M they use the 1595 no load RPM so about 1750 RPM... so they get 44 HP at 1450 full load RPM but can pull 100+ HP on the dyno at 1750.
