Hi we have an old wooden barn that the back is rotted and we want to tear it down but heard that people want the big beams and timbers out of the old barns. Does anyone know any places around ohio that does this? They can have all the wood they want for tearing it down. Thanks for any info.
Matt

Call Sam Stitt at Great Lakes Barn Restorations. I looked for his card but I must have "misplaced" it. He usually has an ad in the Farmers Advance, that may be available from their web site.

Just a word of advice (comes from a neighbour's experience). If someone is interested in the timbers and lumber, make sure the barn is levelled and cleaned up before any of the good wood is removed. Neighbour had a fellow promise to demolish his barn in return for the barnboards. Boards were removed and taken away with the neighbour left with the still standing frame and roof. Remaining structure was very unstable ,finally fell years later and remains a mess to-day.

This is a place where you NEED to be sure they post a performance bond equal to the amount that it will take to have some one finish the job if they don't, and have a clear time to be finished and cleaned up, not just left piled on the lot, or buried in your field while you are not looking! LGD

Joe,

Sometime ago I read an article in the Columbus
Dispatch about an Ohio company that would take down a barn and payment would be the timber
they took away. They used it to rebuild authentic
barns or to sell the valuble, old hard wood (it has a petina unlike new wood). I am sorry that I cannot remember the name of the company, but
if you check around you might come across it.
Or, if you have the time do a search at the local
library for the article.

Tim, rural ohio now...and very happy now

I see a lot of ads in Lancaster Farming Newspaper for barns needing to be taken down.

You might try that route. They usually require proof of insurance by the contractor.

Joe, I don't know where in Ohio you live, but when I lived in Columbus, there were some Amish around Plain City, if I remember right, that did barn razings, removal and restorations.

Maybe post over at the timber framers guild website as well. Before posting there maybe dig out some of the specifics of the barn. Foot print, timber size, type of timbers, an overall count of timbers, roof material, siding material, frame design. Woodweb.com in one of the classifieds sections you will find old barn beams for sale.

On occassion around here we knock the hazardous ones down with an excavator and pick out the salvageable timbers. Rest gets cut into bonfire stock.
