There was a conversion for the Case mod. L or LA using the Detriot 3-71 diesel engine in place of the stock motor in the 1950's. I'd like to hear from anyone that had knowlege of this type setup. I'm curious to know how well the drivetrain held up under pulling conditions. Any info appreciated!

Mother Deere used a souped up Detroit two stroke in a Case chassis in the 50's for New Generation research. The idea was to find out how much HP could be put to the ground using rubber tires. Prior to that time 100+HP was considered requiring crawler tracks. A 3-71 will put out 135HP without being pushed too hard.

If you get a chance, look up Don L over on the Case board. He knows a thing or two about this. He pulls with one, and if you are sitting in crowded bleachers, you'll hear it before you see it.

Chances, do you know if this was a popular modification and who would have done this for "the Farmer". By the photo of yours, it looks like the GM engine case bolts up directly to the radiator support nicely.

I believe the company was called Eddings machine in Kansas. Yep it was a nice job! I also had a 4 cylinder Cummins for a L or LA. Case actually built 1 L with a Cummins.

Here is a picture of a L with 3-71 GM that I use to own. I believe the rear ends were made well enough. The tractors were most likely to have problems just do to high hours. Mine came from Kansas. It know is in New York if I remember right.

I have seen the LA's with the conversion and they are sweet. But this is awesome. If anyone has one like it and needs a place to keep it, let me know. I have more room than money:)

There is or was one on display at the NE state fair. I had not heard of this conversion. I believe they were done by the Egging company. Egging also built tractor cabs. They were not sound guard cabs and this unit was very noisy. Hope I got all that right.
