I bought a s-10 new and have had a few problems most got fixed but now at 50000 miles a few new problems. 1. when warm in neutral when it's warn and you start it it lurches forward, GM said this is normal. 2. then the fan clutch went out a little premature if you ask me. Is anybody else having problems with there GM products??

1998 Chevrolet 4x4 w/350 engine. Engine has cold start knock, gm says normal to sound like a diesel the first 3 miles down the road. Give me an abnormal quiet 350 like I have been buying for the last 25 years. Tranny lost od and reverse, $1980 to put new shaft in. Intake manifold gasket went bad, $680 to replace. Front rotors developed delaminations at 19K. Love the chassis, drive train was a major step back. Had to put a tranny cooler on to tow first load ever >2500 # this spring, so don't know if I will be going back to the GM well for a truck.

Friend of mine has a head gasket go on his ford truck, had to lift the cab off the frame to get the heads off... jeepers creeepers.

Ernie,

That's what they told me about the piston slap too and also that it is way "worse" on the newer engines that don't have a skirt on the piston.

Well, bunk.....it's that darned poorly sized piston that is causing the slap to begin with.

I think it is just plain poor quality control on their part.

I have a 1996 Chevy Silverado half ton, and I like it, but the darn wipers give me problems, I often have to bang on the back of the steering columb by the 4ways switch to get them to work, and they'll sometimes quit and I'll have to fool with them, I suspect it's just a loose connection, but I heard theres a recall on the wiper switch, so I want to call GM on that. Next, is my backup lights don't work all the time, once again, probably a loose connection. I need to call GM and see if I can get those fixed. My truck has low miles and to date only has 69,000 miles, I didn't buy it new and the guy who had it before me meticuliously maintained it, and he had some stuff fixed under warranty, including the 4wd actuator, and the catalyttic converter, which he said fell apart, and GM called it poor workmanship and replaced. Next my plastic "Protecta" bedliner broke on both sides, I know I've had some heavy stuff (nother over a ton though) in there, but I'd never seen a broken bedliner. I have also had problems with my clutch reservoir going dry over a period of time (quickly learned to check it every time I open the hood), and it's a downright scary thing when you go to stop and the truck keeps on going.
If I had to buy another truck, I'd prolly end up with either another Chevy or a Ford Superduty.

Johnboy,
Check with your GM dealer as I think they had a update on the wiper module. There shouldn't be a charge for this update unless you have lots of miles on it. I had a 97 and my GM dealer took care of me.

Had a 2002 Trailblaizer that turned me off to GM for years to come. Biggest piece of junk I have ever owned. I also found out what a service bulletin is, it means GM knows they have an engineering problem but expects you to pay for it.

Jeff,

What's a trailblaizer? Never heard of it.

Do you mean a Blazer? Little 'un or the big 'un?

That's the newer midsize suv that shares the same chassis and styling as the colorado pickup. I think it will eventually replace the s-10 based little Blazer.

My Chevy 1995 1/2 ton has never gave me a problem except the windsheid washer leaks water and I haven"t found out where yet! I bought it used and there was a book in the glove box showing all the repairs and maintance done. All that was done was regular maint and no problems but it was all done on time and logged in. It has 87,000 miles on it and runs like a top. I am a little concerned the white paint is coming off in a few spots. I heard this is a problem for white paint for some reason. Other than that very happy with it knock on wood. My neibors Newer Ford Truck needed a new clutch cost over 1,000.00 to replace glad that was not my truck!! You win and lose when buying a vehical I guess I have been lucky! Mark H.

I have a 2000 S-10. Been through 3 sets ob brake rotors by 40k miles. All replaced due to bad material under warranty. Had the 4wd switcher in the tranny replaced under warranty. Now I have bearing noise in the right front wheel, I cant wait for the cost of that one. Interior trim rattles, now the intermittent wipers are really and truely intermittent. I long for the days of my 89 ranger. 260K with few problems at all.

My warranty went out at 36000 I spent 45 minutes on hold waiting for gm to get awnser about fan clutch. Now I have to take it to the dealer to prove to gm the part prematurely failed. But if you are firm they will pay for most of the repair, and make sure you get parts at dealer cost don't let them apply markup let gm eat profit on parts. My wife hopes it stays together until its paid off..

Mornin' Leland,

Yep, I've got a GMC Yukon that is going in today 'cause it is now leaking antifreeze all over the garage floor.

Guess they don't make 'em like they used to. :>)

Yukon coolant leak: depending on miles but usually a water pump or MORE likely a leaking intake manifold gasket (left front)Changed out more of them than I am years old.

A couple of years ago I was looking for a used Chevy Pickup. I looked at 2 Chevys and 2 GMCs (1996-97) with the Vortec engine. All 4 had antifreeze leaks at the intake manifold.

GM did have a problem with the quick coupler located on the engne. They did come out with a better one so the replacement one lasted longer. If they rust out to bad then you have a very rough time getting the broken one out.

Article in the paper several months ago. GM conducted its own survey and found that 40% of people looking to buy would never even consider a GM product. The reason? Horrible reliability problems since '96. So GM started a new "reliability marketing program" and then announced the largest recall in history!

Reliability marketing? That sounds like corporate think - rather than reliability engineering!

I have a 1998 Olds Reg This is my third 3800 eng. 87,92,and 98. 87 went 130000+ and we traded because we wanted to. 92 went 160000+ and we traded because we wanted to. 98 at70000+ had to replace both intakes, and the starter, and the security ing. $1500 + I was at the dealer to day getting a recall done and the service mang. told me they had, had lots of problems with this series eng. not the 3800 just this series. He just shock his head when I told him I e-mailed Olds last winter when all the work was done, and they replied no recalls have a nice day.

Had an '01 silverado 4x4 lt. It was in the shop every month and a half for this and that falling off, idiot lights coming on....I'm sure your familure with the drill. You know it's bad when you leave the door open with the engine running and the power lumbar support moves out on the drive side. Quite a suprise when you get back in after hooking up a hay wagon. Of course they couldn't fix it and put the seat "back together the way it was from the factory." So what is the point of paying so much for the truck if it all brakes. What sums it up for me is the fact that GM and Ford have had 10-12% less sales from 1 year ago, yet Honda and Toyota have record sales....without huge rebates. Needless to say, there is a Honda in my garage now after my past few GM experiences..

How about an 01 one ton that needed a tie rod replacement at less than 30,000 miles. Or an 02 trailblazer that has repeatedly needed some sensor or other replaced, and also needed the tranny rebuilt because it lost reverse, all at under 35,000 miles. There is no such thing as quality anymore. The people with the Fords and Chrysler products are not happy either.

Hi,

We bought a 2004 Mercury Monterey on the 30th of June. We finally got it out of the shop one week ago today. Nine weeks with a handful of nothing after I wrote the check!

I involked the lemon law 'bout three weeks ago; then, they called last Monday and asked if I would reconsider as they now had the unit repaired..... .

Heck says I, I don't give a fig, as long as I see something for my buck instead of an empty garage bay.

Heck of a nice car..... ..... ..... now. :>)

Allan my wife picked up one of those Montereys about 7 months ago and I couldn't pry it away from her for nothing. She would rather get rid of me than her Monterey. I have to admit it does ride and handle very well. They sure have improved it over the Windstar platform it was built on. What did they do to resolve your problem(s)?

Hi Vern,

Get this.

I was always a little disgruntled because the thing showed 40 miles on the odometer when it was "brand new" and I knew that it had set in their showroom for at least 6 months. I just figured that there had been a lot of folks who had "tried it out".

Well, come to find out, there is a sticker in the glove box that said that the unit had been randomly pulled off the assembly line for a quality control test drive and this was the reason for the miles showing. Hmmm, okay.

From day one, the whole car vibrated like a jack hammer and dived towards the ditch if you let loose of the steering wheel.

A new set of tires cured that problem; 3 were square.

Then, the biggest problem was the left sliding door would not stay closed. Not fun going down the hiway at 65mph and the darned door is wide open.

Long story short, after weeks & weeks of being tied to the hot-line at Ford, it was determined that the forward side door latch was not fully & completely locking. Everything else in the door depends on the "fully latched" front latch to make the rear latch lock into place.

Everything is great now and it is one sweet little ride. It is a tad short of cargo space compared to the FreeStar, but I guess I can live with it.

But darn it! It should be a nice car. When I was 20 years old, I could have bought 2 or 3 irrigated farms for what the these darned things cost nowadays. :>)

Back in the late sixties the wife bought a Ford without first driving it all all speeds and surfaces. It was an LTD and turned out to be a real bad vehicle with everything from bad Firestone tires, bad transmission, bad axle, bad brakes poor carburetion system (390 and C6) to also having been damaged on the car carrier.

She learned her lession and now before she buys she takes them on a trial run. If there is anything she doesn't like she takes it back and trys another until she finds a "good one". It seems to work.

She was into Cougars at one time and tried four of them before she found one that suited her both for driveability, NVH, brakes and fit and finish. She even looks for door edges which stick out beyond the panel ahead of them and catch stones with eventual damage to the paint from stone chips.

She has stayed with the same salesman for years now because he prescreens the vehicle for her and tells her which ones to stay away from. She goes back to him every two years for a new one.

Vern
