Using sickle bar for pond weeds?

I'm thinking of using a sickle bar mower (J.D.#39) to mow the weeds around the pond. These are the large stem weeds (cattails)?. I would modify the mower by mounting it on a rolling gear offset in a way that it would keep the tractor high and dry on the bank. A big modication here, so I would like input as to if this would even cut cattails in the first place before I start thid job. Thanks as always for your time... Jim

I do it all the time. I use a rear mounted MF dynabalanced unit and it cuts weeds like a charm.
Every now and then you have to stop, lift up while backing to remove a ball of crap at the end of the blade. Watch for muskrat burrows that may cause the tractor to lean more than expected toward the pond water. So far so good.
Good Luck, and be careful

I mow around my ponds with my NH 451 all the time. Cat tails don't stand a chance!!

They are a protected species here in my state, so you get in a bit of trouble if you are caught cutting them. Might want to check into that 1st.

The sickle bar mower will cut them.

I'm having difficulty figuring out what it is you are going to modify, if you cantilever the mower many feet to the right, you will have issues with it not cutting while turning as well as the mower pulling the tractor to the side, and the weight will want to tip the tractor, and.... Anyhow, I guess I'm curious how you will make it work? :)

Cattails protected? Are they the state weed or something?

Wetland deal.its illegal t ocut them in some states, but the chances of getting caught are slim.I know when we expanded our building there were some "wetlands",land that stayed wet due to the staes poor system of cutting ditches on new roads, the area stayed wet and cattails grew, the contractor had t oget a permit to bulldoze over them.

The old pulltype mowers were ground driven so you could off set them as much as you want as long as the drive wheel turned it would cut.
