Is the Dana 60 rear a 3/4 ton or a 1 ton?

Thanks.

Both. the Dana 60 has been used as a standard 3/4 and 1-ton rear end in Fords, Dodges, and even a few GM's. It has even been used in some hot Mopar cars, with different axle tubes. I had to rebuild a Dana 70 (with posi) butt end in my '97 Dodge Cummins. It started making noise in 1999 at 43,000 miles, but no one could diagnose where the noise was coming from, so I figured on the risky strategy of driving it until the noise got so bad it would be obvious where it was coming from. This happened about 80,000 miles later, last spring. The housing was full of metal hamburger. Cost almost 4 grand to get it rebuilt. Everything except the axle shafts and housing had to be replaced.

I think you got took JDknut. Those Danas aren't the most fun to rebuild labor-wise what with the preloaded housing and everything, but $4000 is ridiculous. I broke the Dana 60 front on my Dodge Cummins in half, bought a used replacement Dana 61 front and rebuilt it end to end for under $5000, and that included a new carrier to be able to install my old 3.54 gears as I reused the ring and pinion. The carrier was only about $85 as I remember, and the bearing kit was around $150. I replaced the spindle u-joints with Spicers ($60 a piece) and replaced the wheel bearings with Timkens while I was there. The Dana 61 is kind of an oddball front end that they came up with in order to be able to run higher gears. It was used in trucks like my grandpa's '90 Dodge Cummins with an automatic and no overdrive, as it has 3.08s in it to get decent highway speed. The highest ratio available for a regular Dana 60 is 3.54. I had rebuilt Danas before and didn't feel like messing with it, so I took it to Inland Truck Parts and had them set it up for me. I did the rest of the assembly. I think the labor was $200.

A 3.33 ratio is available for the Dana 60 in standard rotation which is the rear axle only. Good for a 2 wheel drive I guess.

Yes, this was a front axle. It required a different carrier to be able to put the 3.54 Dana 60 R&P in the Dana 61 axle.

I agree with the others. It has been used as a 1-ton rear-end under some Dodge gas-burners, and as a 3/4-ton rear-end in other trucks. It is also used as a front axle in some heavy-duty trucks, such as live-axle 1-ton GMs and Cummins Dodges. The parts are available to make it just as strong as a stock Dana 70.

Yep, was used on both. I know some '70's 3/4 ton GMs even had 60's on the rear and 44's up front. Had a '69 K20 with a 292 with 70's front and back. Truth be told, the 70 was a great rearend, but a front 70 was weaker than a 60. My '01 3/4 ton Dodge has a 60 front, 80 rear. As of '03 or '04 though, Dana's are gone from Dodge, are now some Korean made axles.

Yes, I transplanted a Dana 60 out of a '72 Chevy 3/4-ton Custom Camper 402/TH400 under my '72 C-20, in order to get the 3.54s in place of my HO52 with 4.56s. Actually, I ended up with the entire truck except for the body, and want to get the big-block and TH400 rebuilt and installed in mine this winter. I haven't had any experience with the Dana 70 fronts, but have been into some Versatile Bi-Directional axles, which are Dana 70 HDs with drop boxes on the ends. To my way of thinking, the true Dana 60 front died when they went away from lockouts and started putting those goofy axle disconnects on them. I like Danas in general, but for ease of rebuilding and setting up, give me a GM 14-bolt any day. My next "toy" is an '80 Chevy K-30 with a 350/SM465/NP205/14-bolt/Dana 60. I hope to get it before the snow flies, and it should be a beast.

The Dana 60 was used on both. My 75' F250 used a Dana 60 and we used Dana 60's on a 1 ton truck we built for the Post Office here at AM General.

Could be either one. It's a heavy-duty unit.
