Need a Side Mower (suggestions)

I need to get a side mower. This past week I was cutting a ditch bank when all of a sudden the bank gave way. That’s one way to stop someone’s heart. Luckily I backed off the bank without turning over.

At any rate I need a side mower and am looking for recommendations. I have a 55 HP tractor (JD 5310, about 5,500 lbs) with a lot of hydraulic capacity. I want a mower that will cut a 2 inch limb, can be used to cut a ditch bank and also to cut a tree line beside fields (requires ability to rotate 90 degrees vertical). I don’t want to get a larger tractor.

I think I prefer a rotary cutter about 3 to 4 feet wide. Want a hydraulic motor on it.

Anybody got any suggestions or ideas?

You are in for some excitement, in price, mounting, & operation - if you thought the bank giving way was exciting, you ain't seen nothing yet. :)

You need a batwing type mower or a TIGER brand mower. Do a search for Tiger mowers and you can get an idea.

Depends on how much mowing you are wanting to do. I work part time for the county road crew, and they use a side mower that has a hydraulic motor. Has a stack of weights on the left rear tire as well as a large resivoire(sp?)for the hyd. oil. Uses a pump off the PTO to operate the blades as well as the tilt, etc. Excellent for what you are wanting to do, but is a major job to take off and put on. Almost needs to be on a dedicated tractor. There may be a consumer model of the same mower that is a little less heavy duty and a little more easy to put on and take off. Above all, if you use a side mount mower, be sure that your are properly ballasted. A heavy mower hanging over a ditch will turn you over before you have time to react.

Ask your county raod people where they buy equipment fron many used units like you are looking for at these dealers. And look for plenty of rear wheel weights for left side of tractor you are going to need then for counter balance.

I have used a Bush Hog SM60 around some of our fields. We used it with a JD 4230, and it worked well with that size tractor. I would not want much smaller of a tractor. It is my neighbors rig and I didn't want to borrow just the mower and put it on our 2750 JD. Would not have been enough tractor weight to support the mower when extended. It sure did help push the fields back though. The mower part was run off of a Hyd. pump on the mower that hooked to the pto. The extend and tilt were on there own set of hyd. remotes.
