Can anyone explain to me the reason for so called "standard" tractors. They seem to be a cross between a WFE row crop and a utility model, but look more like early gas tractors.

Utility came much later than standard and rowcrop.
I would suppose that originally all tractors were standard, but not designated so as the were no other types. It only became necessary to call them standard when other specialised types appeared and/or when alternative types were introduced in the same model range - just a marketing ploy by the manufacturers or to keep things as simple as possible in those old days.

Looking at early tractor history I wouldn't say the "so called" standard tractor is a cross between any other configurations. Most of the early tractors were "standard" tractors in configuration. The row-crop and the utility configurations followed later with the Farmall being the original "row crop" tractor.

Yep, John is right. They were for us wheat farmers. One of them and a 15 foot JD oneway and you were in the wheat business. Sure beat the two wheel cultivator tractors that would tear the steering wheel out of you hands when it hit a badger hole.

First off, Thanks for asking a non-political question....
Standard tractors were intended for Non-rowcrop farms (i.e. wheat, rice, ect) and for just plain ol' heavy pulling. They were lower clearance, less expensive, (due to less equipment-adjustable axles, 3 point hitch, ect) MOST standards were heavier than their row-crop counterparts. They wer for pulling BIG impliments, in BIG fields. John
