Our club with be doing our Apple festival show this weekend. Prior to the show (the last two days) we have kids come in from the local schools to demonstrate various pieces of equipment and life in the good ole days. Anyways, my part was to talk about the shingle mill and the such. It just amazes me the difference in the kids depending on the teacher. I had groups where the teacher took an intrest and maintained control of the kids and groups where I had to try to keep control of the kids. I guess teaching is like every other profession; some get it and take pride in it and others collect a check. I had some teachers that would correct the kids for misbehaving and asking questions that really didn"t apply and others that were looking around at everything but what they were supposed to. I guess in my wierd view of life I would say that the teacher is in a leadership role and should set the example and set high standards for the kids regardless of weather or not they are intrested in the subject or not. Maybe I am crazy? Anyways, the absolute best group I had was a group of home schoolers. This was the only group that had an substantial age range and they were well behaved and ask really good questions. I must admit I am partial to them since we home school our 2 kids but you see such a tremendous difference.

Sorry for the long post just needed to vent a bit.

Your right, the teachers make all the difference in the world not only in the way the kids behave but also in the way they learn and their desire to learn. Reading Ol Chiefs post I have to say that's one of the craziest things I've heard, but nowdays it's not all that unusual to see and hear crazy stuff from the school system. My roomates boy is in special ed classes. He's almost nine and still has problems reading and writing. Funny thing is instead of concentrating on teaching these kids to read and write in English, they're already throwing Spanish at them. If they want to teach kids a second language that's fine, nowdays it's a benefit knowing one, but TEACH THEM ENGLISH FIRST..... .Just my .02

Been married to a public school teacher for 32 years. There is a big difference in schools and teachers. Some teachers are as you say, there to collect a check and get rhe summer off, and some are there because they want to make a difference. My wife comes home and works 2 or 3 hours every evening on papers and preparing lessons.

Regarding home school versus public school, the big difference is the interest participation of the parents. You would be amazed how many parents have absolutely no interest in their children's academics.

I have to agree with you.Not meaning any offence to others but in observing home schooled kids, all of those whom I have met seem to be ahead of those schooled in other systems.I moved my residence and children from an area in which they were in a very fine private school. The move took us to another rural area which had only public schools.Shortly after enrollment the principal called and complained that my oldest daughter was reading eleventh grade material in the fifth grade class. She informed me that she wanted to move her back to a forth grade class. My wife and I had to make a change.

I have had friends homeschool and do some substitute teaching. Do you know what the differnce is... its the Parents not whether they are homeschooled or not...

matter of fact the one friend was valedictorian of her class and her husband was in the top 10--- her kids that are homeschooled.. well lets just say they are missing something.. they would have been just average students anywhere.

YOU want your kids to do good in school just pay attention to them and what they are doing not just school work.

You have got to be kidding me! Let me see if I get this right? Take someone who excells and punish them for doing so well. This explains a lot, I often wonder why some don't give a (*&%$& these days.

I have to admit that is the craziest story I have heard in a while.

Good Luck!
