Seeing tire chain post below jogged my memory. Here in Northern SC, we usually get ice storms or sleet.... no fun to drive in, but gone in a few days. For limited use, are the cable-type chains any good ?? Also, on a dually, is it OK to just use a chain/cable on the outside wheels on the back? Thanks, Davis

Thanks for advice.... No more than I will travel, I guess chains will hold up OK. Might as well get 6 just to be safe. Thanks again

I have never used the cable type chains, although I have seen them. Look OK I guess. One thing that does woek well on Semi's though, is the air operated drop down chains. The milk trucks use them around this area, as they have to go in some bad areas at times, and then out on good highway. Driver just hits a switch, and drops the 4 sets down, and cross chains fly out under the wheels. Pretty slick, but pricey. Not an option for a pickup though. Just a thought...

Putting a single set of chains or cables on a dual tire setup will work OK on ice or hardpacked snow. If you start digging down, however, the tire without the chain/cable will begin taking weight and the traction on the chained tire goes away. As far as which is more effective: Werner Transportation runs only cables on their big trucks and by February that stretch of I-70 between Denver and Eagle, Colorado is pretty much paved with Werner iron! On grades like Vail pass, the Eisenhower Tunnel approaches, Red Mountain pass and the like cables don't have enough bite. Also, cables don't have the strength to transmit that kind of torque without failing when they do have bite.

I cant answer your question other than to say I was told to put them on both tires, and I have a set coming now.I am not getting stuck in that mess like we had last year.If you know where Grace is on hwy 221,I sat there for seven hours in the big ice storm.Tractor trailers got jackknifed on each side as I was going through there. When I finally got able to go,I stuck to the backroads and made it home much better!

Davis,
I used cable chains many years ago on a tractor-trailer rig. They work, but are not as effective as twist link or v-bar chains. I used the cable chains for there ease putting then on. Chaining up an 18 wheeler to cross the Rockies in winter was a real pain in the butt. Unless you are caring a substantial load all the time, most people here in So. Minnesota take the outside dual off in winter.
