OT - Ford Diesel Truck Mileage ?

I am looking at a 2004 F-250 supercab with the big turbo diesel.

Any of you guys have any experience with them ?

What kind of fuel mileage can I expect ?

Any problems with these trucks ?

Any help would be appreciatted !

I have a 99 F-350 with the 7.3 turbo powerstroke, the worst I got was 17 going to jury duty in town, and it goes between 20 and 22 on the open road, diesel was 2.07 last time I filled up and I doubt it will go down for a while, I love the truck so much that I plan to have another one after this one getts tired, but I have to say that diesel engines sure have changed over the years, there are more sensors on this one than I ever remember on any of the old ones..

While I don't have the 6L T/D, My 99 F350 with the 7.3 l Powerstroke/AT, consistntly gets 19-20 mpg at 2000 rpm (67 mph) with the A/C off and unloaded. Loaded pulling at 20 ft goose neck at with a combined gross weight of 19000 lbsover montainous terrain in western Montana and, Idaho and Washington, I averaged 12-14 mpg at 1900 rpm (about 60 mph)with A/C off. Anybody that doesn't believe that a diesel engine is more thermally efficient than a gas engine is defying physics.

Got an 04 F-350 4x4 ext cab Single rear wheel with 5k miles on it. Been getting 17-19 empty on hwy, about15 in city and between 12-15 pulling 26ft 5th wheel. have 3.73 rear end, 6.0 diesel and automatic. I've brought up this topic here before and it usually gets wild. A good site to go is www.6literpowerstroke.com also RV.net gives a good perspective from the Recreational Vehicle people who do a lot of towing also.

Hi FM,

It's all in how you drive them. Most people do 45mph with in 200ft of leaving a stop lite. How can they expect to get great mileage driving like that?

Me, pulling 16k GVW I average 14.1mpg over 3800miles from the Colorado rockies to Arizona. 19.2mpg empty and my 15k mile life time average is 17.1mpg with 6k miles of pulling 16k GVW. My recent turkey hunting trip of 1148 miles was 17mpg with 16k GCW for 600 miles of 6% to 7% grades.

How? I drive by maximum torque rpm or 1600rpm on my 02, 7.3 PSD, CC, lwb, DRW, 6spd, 4wd. The 6.0 is getting slightly better, about 2mpg.

On any DBW system you will need to retrain your driving style if you want great fuel mileage.

I would look at the Dodge tho as my son just bought a 04.5 CTD,CC, SWB, 6spd, $6K cheaper than he could buy a Ford with the same options. The Dodge CC is slightly smaller (about 6") than the Ford CC but usable. With the CTD you can expect about 3mpg better than the PSD.

Just want to make one comment, I have heard some outlandish claims for great fuel mileage from folks that own diesel powered pickup trucks. I am not going to call anyone a liar, but until I see the results from a side by side comparison of 2 exact same trucks, one being diesel, the other gas, equally loaded, and on the same road at the same time, I will not be convinced that diesel is the way to go.

RF - #2 diesel fuel has about 20% more heat energy in it than gasoline, and since diesel engines are a variable air/fuel ratio engine they only burn enough fuel to produce the amount of torque required. When #2 was $1/gal. about 8 yrs ago when I ordered My truck the payback on the diesel option including the 14 quart oil changes instead of the six quarts a gas engine would need was at around 120,000 miles. But since I'm getting about 1 to 1-1/2 mpg better mileage than I hoped the payback was quicker. Friend had a comparable gas powered truck, He got 10-11 mpg with a 351 cid gas V-8 and I'm getting 18-1/2 to 19 mpg average over the last 8 yrs & 266,000 miles. I have gotten over 20 quite a few times in the summer. My last 1/2 ton 300-6 gas powered truck, SWB 4X4 with no air conditioning, manual tranny, etc. only averaged 14 to 14-1/2 mpg over 9 yrs & 120,000 miles. I still have all the fuel mileage log sheets for both trucks. My diesel weighs about 2000# more than My old 1/2 ton. There's a reason why every trucking co. in the nation runs diesels....except for a few old Brown trucks..... The diesel is more efficient.... You just have to drive a LOT to make it pay. If You don't drive over 10,000-15,000 mi. a year NO WAY can You justify a diesel. BUT, Now You throw in this $2.50/gal. diesel fuel and that changes EVERYTHING..... You can buy a LOT of gas for the $4000-$5000 the diesel option costs.

I agree with that, I always thought of the diesel truck as a workhorse--there sure are a lot of people around here that have one that have no use for it at all, just a status thing i guess. I"ve got a 99 Powerstroke F-350 super cab about 85% of the miles on it are with the gooseneck flatbed in tow. Dad just got a new F-250 V10, not impressed with the mileage on that. However when towing there"s no comparison between gas and diesel.

So I'm over at a flea market one Sat. and come upon this power stroke, full blooded boy's toy. Nuttin left out. Across the tail gate are the words: "Have you had your Cummins stroked lately?"

Thought it was kinda cocky of the dude.

Ford Man,

I have an '03 with the 6.0 and have had no problems with it so far. I get 17 mpg in town and 22 on the hwy. As txblu said filters and oil changes are expensive, oil change is $75.00 at the quick change. Have heard air filters are 75.00 also, and there are 2 fuel filters on them which I have heard are also very expensive. So far it has been a good truck, just wish the price of diesel would go down. $2.15 here in n-texas.
I dont know how true this is but I was told full service at the ford dealer oil,filters etc.. will set you back about $400.00

N.E. Collin, So of Grayson (Corner of Fannin actually).

Try to keep my critters close by. Do my runnin in a 91 Ford 460 1ton dually flat bed. Since things are close and this is a farm truck, don't pay much attn to fuel prices for it.

On the tractors, I get farm diesel which gives me the 40 cent tax break. Nuther reason I like Ford tractors....just sip the fuel.

Don't have one, neighbors do, filters are many and expensive, requiring frequent changing. Diesel is $2.15/gallon and gas $1.86. Hear horror stories about problems with the engine; piddly problem but costs lots to fix them.

Everybody doesn't get 20 mpg on their diesel, nor do we get 10 mpg on gas rigs any more.

My tractors are diesel, but my trucks are gas.

(Duckin the flak.....here comes the "Power Strokers".)

Got a couple of older diesels here, '96 3500 Dodge with 4:11's and a 96 Ford 250 with 3:90's? Not real sure on it but i know the RPMS are less at the same speed as the old one ton with 4:11's was. If I keep the speed down under 65 I can get around 19-20 in the Ford and about 16-18 in the Dodge empty. Loaded they both run about 11_14 depending on how many tractors are on the trailers at the time.

Ford has 186,000 on it and we just had the wiring harness on the glow plugs changed. Other than that no probs. No probs with the Dodge yet but it is only on 86,000 miles.

There is a guy I know who has a 93 Ford 250 with a chip that claims 22 in town and about 27 on te interstate. he and a few others who have rode with him say the same thing but I have not seen it personally.

Hi JEFF - I've got a '96 F-250 PSD also.... only axle ratios avail. in '96 were 3.55's and 4.10's. I got 3.55's in My 4X4 at 2000 rpm is right around 67-68 mph.... and I get the same mpg-19-20 hiway at 65-70 mph.

OK I wasn't sure what was available. I know it will pull a load really good with whatever it has in it but we had a one ton Ford also and the Rpm was different at a given speed so I am figuring it had a different ratio. I'll look and see what mine runs at 65 for sure

Had a '83 Dodge 318. Neighbor had one too. I got around 13 and he always claimed 20.

One day I rode with him to town. He drove 45 mph the whole way and it took him about a mile to accelerate to 45.

Think he was maybe telling the truth.

Never rode with him again.

Daily driver is a 2003 F350 with the 7.3 liter.
19 MPG towing or not, fuel mileage drops off at speeds above 70 MPH. The truck rides good and has plenty of room.
