Mornin' Fellas,

I was visiting with one of the vendors of old tractor parts that most of you know & have probably dealt with in the past just as I do.

Anyway, we got to talking about people in general and their honesty. Offhandedly, I made the comment that I would assume that about 99% of all people were basically good, honest people.

He retorted that "No, that isn't how it works. 50% of all my customers are just plain no good. Out of that 50%, 25% are total deadbeats and the other 25% always have some kind of a lame excuse for non payment."

Just thought that this was interesting,

Allan

Hello Allan,

Interesting topic...

Statistically speaking, the average credit score in the US is 670, on a scale of 300-850. With a score of 670, I would expect a loss ration (on car loans) at 5.6%. Thus 94.4% of the folks are honest.

On a personal level, I have found this to hold relatively constant. One can certainly find their share of long haired, maggot infested, dope smoking, left leaning, FM types, but for the most part, people tend to be decent.

Have a good'un.

Dug

My wife has had a business dealing with the public for 14 years. Pet grooming - about a 100 transactions per week. Most by check. In that whole time, she has had maybe 3 bad checks. One from a young couple (18?) and two from construction guys. One weird event - a cop from another city didn't pay - said he left his money in his other pants. After several phone calls and 2 weeks, no money. She called the police officers department. After talking to several police officers, ending up with the leautenant. The officer was there with cash in 1 hour! He needed a receipt too! The police department called back to make sure that the officer had taken care of the bill. He never came back. Not that we missed his business. Irv

People tend to remember bad experiences and forget good ones. Must be part of our genetic makeup. Whoever it was must keep tabs on the bad actors and forget half the forthright people.

I have never in my life gyped a person and never will. I also have no qualms about telling people about a bad experiance with another. Bad actors should be outed for the dirtballs they are. Problem with that is if you talk about a bad experience with a person too much they take your butt to court for defamation of chaacter or sumptin'.

I have a few deadbeat customers, but most are honest & pay on time. As far as the deadbeats go, I just quote a much higher price for services they need. That way, I avoid the problem of adding late fees. One customer takes 90 to 270 days to pay net 30 invoices, shop rate is doubled for them.

The world is full of over spenders who can't pay any bill until it is several months over-due. There are also many good people out there too. The other side of this is the vendors that are shady. There is good and bad everywhere and we learn to deal with both and move on.

One thing that is very refreshing is dealing with extremely trusting people. The first time that I bought from Taylor Equipment and he said he would just send an invoice with the parts, I couldn't believe it. Most people want to charge your credit card or clear the check long before they ship the item. Needless to say, I will faithfully buy from him even if I can find an item cheaper(which I usually can't).

And a fine mornin' to you all!

Did you know that 72% of all statistics are made up on the spot?

Oh well...It's early.

I try to believe that MOST people are honest. That seems to work in my favor. Treat people the way you want to be treated, I say.

I've had a grand total of 4 people try to "stiff" me on sales or service fees over the years. Out of the hundreds I've dealt with, that isn't bad odds.

I'm all in favor of making name PUBLIC RECORD when someone is a crook though. No reason why EVERYONE needs to be ripped off, just because they got me or you.

In addition to my "day job" and the farm, I buy and sell used farm equipment, and do "custom farming". MOST of the work I do, and MOST of the equipment I sell, is to the YUPPIE population that's invading our area. They tend to want a lot for nothing. They also want to use equipment, then return it after they get their job done. I'm not in the "loaner" business.

Doctors and lawyers tend to be the worst when it comes to paying on time. Real estate agents are just as bad. I won't even consider working for home builders anymore. Most of them are nothing short of criminals....

I tend to pass up "deals' that look shady. I try to deal in cash as much as possible. Checks over $500 must clear the bank before anything leaves the yard. (UNLESS I know the person)

Life is too short to be putting yourself in stressfull situations that can be avoided.

"Don't take any wooden nickels" John

I hear all these horror stories and count my lucky stars. I've had about the same luck in that department as you have. In 20 years of being in business dealing mainly with farmers and machinery jockeys I've been given 3 bad checks, all of which were made good, and lost $200 to a guy who filed bankrupcy, and a couple of slow pays.
You tend to get a "feel" for people and as Kenny Rogers say, "Know when to walk away and know when to RUN!"

Problem I pay for that crap with the prices I have to pay for what I buy.

That's just plain stealing and they let them do it.

Guys, having worked for the public, around the public, and for myself, I have found what most of you have found. Only one or two bad apples in each barrel, and you know what? Usually the ones that HAVE the big money are the slowest to pay. Guess they want everybody to LOOK AT ME AND WHAT I GOT and not worry about us "little" people. Oh well, I've found a hundred times, What goes around, comes around. Later, Harley

Whew that is a sad commentary. I haven't found that to be the case with my small business or with the people I have dealt with on the internet (mostly). I do know that on occasion Payment I have made has been lost or drawn from the the wrong account at the wrong time creating a very temporary financial crises that sets my wife and I running in circles, so I try to allow for that in my customers too. The unexpected happens and I expect it to. All has been made very good to me. If I have a problem with a customer and he treats me honestly I will go a long time on a payment due and be right there to deal with them again. The ones I have no time for are the long or no pays with out even a lame excuse. I have a Dr. Customer. He could buy and sell me a couple hundred times over. Always the last to pay. I waste no time charging a late fee on him.

Oh, I don't know. I've been selling on the web for a couple years now and have not had a deadbeat customer yet. Once in a while I get an email asking about why an item has not been shipped, I fire back with the delivery confirmation number and never hear from them again. Once in a while a check gets lost in the mail and we have to try again, items can get damaged in shipment but have not had much trouble with UPS or Priority mail. If the seller is forthright, and upright and downright honest, he don't have no trouble.

I bet that tractor parts vendor could get his "no good customer" figure up to 90% if he would allow more people to take advantage of him.
Allan; you're in business, and you know what would happen if you started a "Oh, just pay me when you feel like it" billing program. Everybody, and every customer will graviate towards the path of least finical resistance if you allow it. The seller / vendor / merchant has the ability to set the rules by which he provides services or merchandise. If credit becomes a problem...don't give it, if checks become a problem...don't take them! He would soon find that he was doing business with that 99% group of decent people once again!

PS:If you want to take some time off to come up North, and help me haul hay, I promise to pay you just as soon as I sell my horse...

Allan, I agree with you on the 99%. I have met a few vendors who fall into that 50% category themselves, either the product they have is only 50% as good as they represent it to be, or the price is 50% too high. I can understand that group of vendors having that kind of attitude.

Politicians who are campaigning need to get flu shots. If they got the flu, they come in contact with so many people that they could cause an epidemic all by themselves. Doesn't matter which party, they should all get flu shots. Same thing goes for anyone who comes in contact with large numbers of people on a daily basis.

I dont think the problem is with the v.p. getting a flu shot. It is just the idea of the sixty, seventy and eighty year old people standing if line in wheelchairs and blankets wraped around them in the cold and in some cases dieing in line while the members of congress jump right to the front of the line for their shots. Age doesnt matter if you are government offical, just jump to the head of the line and forget about the old people who have built this country. Great example of leadership we have in America. Makes me sick to think about it.

Hi SR,

No, that isn't how it works.

Anyone, anywhere over the age of 65 who has a pacemaker is allowed the shots. Further, these folks are notified by their doctors to come in and get it as soon as possible for their well-being.

It has absolutely nothing to do, in any way whatsoever, with the leadership in the country.

It is a purely medical call. The reason I'm spouting all this, is because this is what I do for a living and am privy to this info.

Although I'd admit, a left-leaner would sure like to make this practice a political football.

Yes Sir,

If that is indeed so, then you of course, have a pretty firm grasp on the stick and I'm definitely with you and your thinking.

But, I was only talking about the VP.

Last week the local Doctor here called my folks. My step dad has a pacemaker; both mom and he are in their 80s.

They went into his offices as requested, mom thinking she would just get the shot also since she was in there. They wouldn’t let her have the shot, as she wasn't high risk as he was with the pacemaker.

Peace Bro, :>)

One day as the Little Red Hen was scratching in a field, she found a grain of wheat.

"This wheat should be planted," she said. "Who will plant this grain of wheat?" "Not I," said the Duck.

"Not I," said the Cat.

"Not I," said the Dog.

"Then I will," said the Little Red Hen. And she did.

Soon the wheat grew to be tall and yellow.

"The wheat is ripe," said the Little Red Hen. "Who will cut the wheat?" "Not I," said the Duck.

"Not I," said the Cat.

"Not I," said the Dog.

"Then I will," said the Little Red Hen. And she did.

When the wheat was cut, the Little Red Hen said, "Who will thresh the wheat?"

"Not I," said the Duck.

"Not I," said the Cat.

"Not I," said the Dog.

"Then I will," said the Little Red Hen. And she did.

When the wheat was threshed, the Little Red Hen said, "Who will take this wheat to the mill?"

"Not I," said the Duck.

"Not I," said the Cat.

"Not I," said the Dog.

"Then I will," said the Little Red Hen. And she did.

She took the wheat to the mill and had it ground into flour. Then she said, "Who will make this flour into bread?"

"Not I," said the Duck.

"Not I," said the Cat.

"Not I," said the Dog.

"Then I will," said the Little Red Hen. And she did.

She made and baked the bread. Then she said, "Who will eat this bread?"

"Oh! I will," said the Duck.

"And I will," said the Cat.

"And I will," said the Dog.

"No, No!" said the Little Red Hen. "I will do that." And she did.

I am only 66 and I got my flu shot for free. Anyone here who is over 65 can get a flu shot. And if you are under 65 but have certain medical problems you can get a flu shot.

Back when I was self employed (electrician) I would send out 3 bills and then send the sheriff with a summons to small claims court. That worked for me.

Fellow I was working for many years ago said the farmers back up in the hills would pay before the farmers down in the valley with their nice house and barn and new tractor.

well, I am sure glad to see that Mr. President has brought out country together as a bringer togetherer as opposed to a dividerer. This administration has failed to keep any of the policies that they ran under in 2000. It doesn't look like he will be able to keep any of his present commitments in the next 4 years either. Wait a minute, if he is re-elected, he doesn't have to as it will be the VP's problem.
This country is as evenly split down the middle as we were 4 years ago. Even after the 9-11 fiasco. The Pres. couldn't bring the country together due to everyones ideals. I don't like higher taxes either but I am on kidney dialysis and can no longer work for a living. The Pres. just doesn't get it. He has been living a life of politics for so long that HE expects everything that he gets also. How long do we have to pay for him? We pick up the tab for all our Presidents until they are gone, well that is a long time for W.and Slick willie and #41 and Ford and The Peanut farmer. I want to know why we can't have the same type of health insurance that the politicians have. If it is good enough for them then it is good enough for the rest of the country. How are we going to pay for the war in Iraq if we keep reducing taxes for millionares? Why do we allow professional sports players large tax breaks to play football and baseball when most people would give their right arm to play for free.
