Hello all,
A friend of mine wants me to build him a wagon for his horse ( a Belgin I believe) to pull. Nothing fancy, just a flat deck hay wagon. But he wants it to be able to put a single tree or double tree hook up on it. I guess he plans on getting another horse and having a team.

The question is, how big should the wagon be. We dont want it to be too big for one horse to pull, or too small to have two horses hooked up. Any good web sites where I could find plans and info.

Any help would be appreciated, Thanks, Grant

The amish around here pull full sized racks with a team and some times gravity boxes to boot so just make a normal hay rack and be done with it should roll easy with floater tires on it.

Do a search for, "horse and buggy days of Texas"
Don't know if they can help but they have wagon and buggy parts. I'm thinking the guy will build you a wheels or complete wagon. and him being a Texan, I bet he would answer any question you might have.

A friend of mine had the same problem he ended up going into Amish Country (Please don't anyone start up). There he found several wagons, like what you are looking for, for sale and found them to be cheaper than he could manufacture one himself and very well built. He was the hero of his household.... for awhile.

Don't need to go to Amish country for that. If it's a Belgian, just put wheels on a house, it'll pull it. And speaking of Amish country, where I live, are plenty of Belgians, and those are some serious horses, if you ask me. Gotta make 'em pull something, or develope bad attitudes about themselves. And you don't want them gettin' moody.

Had you scared, didn't I? And I missed it, but can guess.

Thanks Mark, I think that is why he wants to get the horse working. He got a set of harrows, but you can only do so much with them. I think he just wants to load the waggon down and let her pull.

I grew up with Belgians (dad was a veterinarian) Those old girls were great because you knew 5 min before they got their leg up to kick. If you didn't notice..... There is a great documentary made by some friends of mine and PBS called "When We Farmed with HOrses" There is a young, with hair, Sloroll in it too. If you like draft animals it is really good to see and see how all that old fence row iron used to work.
