If somebody stole your toolbox, is there a way to put the loss on schedule F?

Are small tools supplies?

My understanding is that if it is personal property, (Not already taken as a business expense), you can claim it as a casualty loss. However , loss is reduced by a factor of 10% off top & 10% of your adjusted income. Probably not worth the hassle to claim. Ask your CPA though, he might know a better way.

I'm a simple dirt farmer, not a CPA, so don't rely on my advise....

You should be deducting your farm supplies, such as tools used for farming, as a business expense as you buy them on the schedule F. These are supplies.

Being stolen does not help you write them off, & you can't write them off now - only when you buy them.

You should be able to write off your new tools when you buy replacements.

Ah, tax questions!!!!

by small, do you mean small and very expensive or small and don"t cost much, low cost items that get lost/stolen could very easily be supplies

very expensive items (no matter the size) catch auditors eye, should go on depreciation schedule and you there you take section 179 on them, get it all in one year if you have a profit that year

lock your pickup, get a mean dog, ask your neighbors to keep an eye out

If you have already deducted it as an expense. there is no way you can deduct you already have. Your only recorse is to deduct the replacement cost. Then you have to be farming to fill out Sch F. More than likely if you try to take on the other form you will loose it any way.

My accountant told me to be creative when figuring what is an expense and what isn't. Just a suggestion.

I don"t know present ruling in this matter, however years ago I claimed a tool loss due to a robbery.IRS disallowed the claim becauseI did not have a signed police report.I suppose you must realize that different IRS operatives interpret their rulings to suit themselves.I think IRS is similar to an old saying which says,YOU know -Three Greeks, four opinions.

Casualty loss. Separate form. Takes like 10 yrs to write it off. Don't remember the form number.
