I have been fortunate enough to find two small tractors lately, mainly because I have the fever that you all have, and I need to sell one of them, so I need some advice. I need a tractor for pushing snow with a blade and doing a little brush hogging. What I have is an NAA with the standard 4 speed in good condition. It needs about $400.00 worth of work. The other is a Ferguson TO30 with a 5 speed and HI/LO. It needs about $250.00. The NAA was $2500 and the TO30 was $1200. Which should I keep and why?

If they only cost you that much, keep both! You'll be surprised how often you'll wish you had an "extra" tractor.

I claim no expertise, but I'm not familiar with a TO 30 with 5 speed/hi lo..... aftermarket trans....or did I miss something in the early '50s?

I'm assuming it is a 5 speed. The top numbers on the plate at the base of the shifting arm show 1, 3, and a 5 (or an S), and 2, 4, and R on the bottom. Am I seeing things?

TO-30's are 4 speeds Fwd and 1 Rev. At the top it's 1, 3 S; on the bottom is 2, 4, R. The S stands for "starter", which is actuated when you move the shift lever to the "S" position

Keep the one with the live PTO! :<) Barring that, keep the Ferguson- both will do about the same amount of work, it needs less repair, and selling the Jubilee will put more money in your pocket to work on the Ferguson. Or to go buy an Oliver 550 to make you forget about the other two.

Youre kinda caught between a rock and a hard place. We had a TO-30 for 52 years and a 641 Ford for awhile. The 641 is an upgrade of the Jubilee. Both are good tractors. I dont think either one has live pto.The Jubilee would have live hydraulics and position control. The Ferguson just has draft control. 5 speed tranny with hi-lo on the Ferguson? You didnt confuse the gearshift lever start position for 5th gear did you? And dont know where the hi-lo would come in.You might get more money for the Ford.

I did confuse the "5" for an "S". Why an "S" and not an "N"? The NAA does have a live PTO, at least I'm pretty sure it does because it engages without the clutch being in. Thanks for your reply,
Tom

I'm still confused by your hi/lo; in a "30"? The 35, 50, etc had a 3 by 2 transmission giving a total of 6 forward speeds..... .thought the 30s were strictly 4 speed??? "S"..... start. The Jubilee PTO engages without the clutch being in??

I'm only telling you what I see on the tractor. The guy who painted it before I got it painted pretty sloppily and covered up some of the info provided on the metal plates. Maybe it's a 35, but it does have 4 speeds and up in front of the clutch is a lever that splits it between HI and LO. ????? I tried them out before I bought it and sure enough, HI/LO.

I think he probably has a Sherman aux. trans in front of the 4 speed trans. They were tons more common on the Fords but, they were as interchangeable as a lot of other parts in those years. ps.... as much as I love my Jube, I"d still keep the 30.

You have me wondering about the PTO now on the NAA. Can anyone help me here. I haven't actually used the PTO since I just got it but I thought it was live.

Neither one of those tractors has a live PTO as far as I know but I do not know TO's very well.
You will need a over running clutch to use you brush cutter.

Ford.
The NAA would have a 4 speed trans; 31hp gas engine; live Hyd; Draft and position control and trans PTO. This means the PTO will only turn with the clutch out.

Position control is very helpful when using a 3 point blade as you can hold it at any height.

Ford did not come out with live PTO until the 600/800 which is 2 years younger than your tractor. And then it was only available with a 5 speed trans. Which had a 2 stage clutch. 1 stage for the PTO and the other for the trans.

To decide what one I would keep..... ..
The Sherman hi/lo in the TO is a great plus. I'd say if the TO has position control (I do not know TO's) I would keep it just because it has the hi/lo. Other than that I would keep the Ford.

Better yet I would sell both of them and get a Ford 660 because it has live PTO. This is the same tractor as the NAA but with the upgraded trans and clutch.

The TO does not have position control and after checking out the PTO on the Jub I was in error as you said, it's not live. I think I am going to find a blade and wait for the first snow, then try them both out. I think you are right about the 600/800. I saw one the other day that I think I am going to inquire about, Maybe I'll get lucky and upgrade. Thanks for your help. Tom

"S" equals start on the early Fergies. Pretty good safety device as you could not possibly start it up in gear.
