Hello
I have a 1960 IH B110 truck with a 6 cylinder gas engine with a broken block. I was wondering what models of IH 4 cylinder Diesels would fit and how they would bolt up to the 3 speed manual transmission.

Someone told me that almost any IH diesel engine will have the same bolt pattern as the bellhousing on that transmission. is he right?

Thanks,
Russ

I had an old Motor"s Truck repair manual in the 70"s that listed the D-301 as an option in some smaller IH trucks. The engine looked the same as the 560 Diesel engine, but had no sleeves, thus the larger bore and displacement.

I belive they were used in some combines and maybe cotton pickers.Know some people bolted right into 460 and 560 chassis'.

Seems to me my diesel scout had the same clutch as my 1100 MF tractor. IH used some 354 Perkins engines in Loadstar trucks and a few went into Scouts. The Nissan diesel used in Scouts might work. That engine was used in forklifts and parts are available if you spend a little time online. I also have a 4 cyl Cummins mated to a Chrysler automatic, Postal Jeep application DJ5 that might fit in your truck. E-mail if you are interested.

I don't have the manuals back that far but what size is the engine? If it is like a 264 or 284 CID some of the farm tractors shared the same blocks. the 460 used a 221 CID, the 560,656,706 used the 263 and 282.

My neighbor has two IH trucks. Both around 1960 vintage, and both B110s. He has Detroit Diesel 3-53s in both of them. I don't know why he chose those engines, and don't know how much beefing up the front suspension was needed. Seems those engines are awful heavy for the power (and noise) produced. He's been driving them for years. Comes down the road doing 25 MPH and sounding like he's going 60.

hello
A 466 would not work in this truck at all, It is only a 1/2 ton. As for the diesels in scouts..they were a Nissan...hard to find and harder to find parts. And for gearing, i'm not worried, this truck will only see back country roads and won't get driven any faster than 40 MPH. so it should be good enough. I only want to stick with a 4 cylinder diesel or a small 6 cyl, Because I can't put too much weight in the front, it's only a half ton.

Thanks,
Russ

Russ,Check with The Scout Connection. 319-372-3272 I have never had any buisness with these people but I know where they are at. www.scoutconnection.com (I Googled them) The trouble with going from gas to diesel is the gearing in the rear end,a gas will run at say 3000 R.P.M. and a diesel will run at 2100R.P.M. max good luck, kjm

I remember reading that there was a rare diesel option in late 50's or early 60's IH pickups. A little research might find which engine model they used. That would be an interesting conversion.

On the same subject, I see many references to IH DT466 engines- just what are they, what are the most common applications, and would they be acceptable for a midsize truck?

The designation: DT466, stands for Diesel Turbocharged 466 cubic inch. An almost bullet proof, tried and proven farm tractor type engine. We used them in a lot of mining applications from motor graders to trucks and they were always reliableand had plenty of power. There is also a smaller version of it, the DT366 which is a smaller displascement engine. The newer versions that say DT466E are electronic controlled. I drove one in a S1900 series 1986 model grease truck that always weighed in at around 30K pounds and ran almost 300K miles before ever having any major repairs. it did have regular maintainence and 5,000 mile oil changes and filters. It was always dependable. Truck is still in use today, and must have over 600K miles on the engine . Think they finally did replace injector pump. Transmissions and clutches have given the most trouble. Excellent engine in my opinion. Gene Davis
